The best places to spot or photograph aircraft at Exeter International Airportare detailed below. There is also a handy map derived from the Aeronautical Information Services website of the CAA.. Spot number 1 is “Gate 6” on the old A30 road to the east of Clyst Honiton village. It allows views of light aircraft parked outside hangars on the northside. Spot 2 is the bridge over the new A30 dual carriageway. Good landing shots can be obtained from here whilst runway 08 is in use. The airfield cannot be seen from this point. Spot 3 is the car park to the west of the airport terminal and British European's "Hangar 3". Good views of the "western apron" where most of the visitors who require a hard surface park. There is also a lay-by on the A30 adjacent to the car park which affords similar views. Please note that, from April 1st 2004, this is a Long Term car park. If you drive in it will cost you a minimum of £7.00 to get out again! Spot 4 is the glass-fronted viewing balcony in the airport terminal building. Good views of the apron area and distant views of the northside areas. Restricted runway views of the western half of runway 08/26 only. Spot 5 is the Exeter Flying Club. Good views of virtually the entire runway and the distant north side parking areas. Visiting and many based light aircraft park on the grass opposite the clubhouse. Please note that the car park here is private and for members of the Exeter Flying Club only. Please use the short term car park opposite the terminal building where the first 20 minutes of parking is free. Spot 6 is always worth a visit as this is Flybe’s main maintenance hangar. The new Flybe maintenance hangar is being built here as well. Even if the hangar doors are closed there are usually (but not always!) aircraft parked outside. On leaving the main airport entrance, turn sharp left, keeping the airport fence on your left. There is room to turn a car around just after the hangars in the entrance to car park 4. From the entrance to car park 4 there are good views down runway 31 on which, sometimes, visiting or diverted aircraft are parked, and also of some northside parked aircraft. Please do not trespass on the airfield (or cut holes in the fences) and enjoy your spotting! |
