Data Model Review Guidelines

Data Models are difficult both to develop and review. The following are some recommendations for reviewing data models, that if followed should help you in preparing your comments, and make it easier for the author of the model to respond to them.

Data models do a number of things:

  • They define things.
  • They make statements about things (relationships and constraints).
  • They identify information about things that can be held.

In general you have a legitimate issue with a data model if it:

  • Has a definition or statement (or corollary) that is untrue, ever.
  • Is unclear or ambiguous.
  • Does not contain objects that are part of your requirement, or does not enable the information you require to be held.
