Did The Other Teams Turn Up?
Yes they did and we showed them how to win a gala in style.
Saturday saw Great Yarmouth swimmers travelling to Dereham and North Walsham to take part in the Norfolk County Junior League. Dereham results are to follow, but it can be reported that the team for Great Yarmouth competed in North Walsham against Kings Lynn, Long Stratton and Aylsham.
Great Yarmouth started incredibly well and by the interval, had taken a whopping 31 point lead from Aylsham, with Kings Lynn and Long Stratton joint third. In fact eighteen out of the twenty races were firsts, with the other two seconds.
The nine year old age group completed relays only. Cydney Funnell, Georgina Harris, Katie Lewis and Daisy Parker for the girls and Luka Oosthysen, Henry Potter, Bradley Webb and Keelen Pywell fro the boys, who all finished a very close second.
Great Yarmouth increased their lead as the Gala progressed, deservedly by presenting a well trained, tidy team
In the 10 year olds (all firsts) Evie Lodge took first in the butterfly and freestyle, firsts also for Zoe Johnson in the backstroke and K Applegate in the freestyle. The boys: Oscar Moore first in the butterfly, Andrew Lewis first in the backstroke and freestyle and J Applegate in the breastroke. They all also took first place in the medley and freestyle relays.
The Eleven year olds also swept the board with firsts in all the relays and for the girls individuals: Emma Fisher came first in the butterfly and breaststroke, with Chloe Cashman first in the backstroke and freestyle. The boys likewise took all firsts: Bradley Ellis in the butterfly and backstroke, with J Applegate again taking first in the breaststroke swimming up and Dominic Lee the freestyle.
The twelve year olds, not to be outdone by the younger members took all firsts in the relays, Katie Lewis first in the backstroke, Laura Harris first in the freestyle and Individual medley. Shanice Webster first in the breaststroke, but meeting fierce competition in her butterfly race took a very close second. The boys again took all firsts: Joss Grant the butterfly and breaststroke, Dominic Lee the Backstroke and Malbert Funnell the freestyle and the individual medley.
At the end of the Gala, unsurprisingly, Great Yarmouth finished in first place on 163 points, Aylasham second with 98 points, Long Stratton 3rd with 66 points and Kings Lynn 4th with 56 points.

Great Yarmouth Swimming Club competed in the Inter Club “C Team” gala , hosted by Oulton Broad, in Lowestoft on Saturday.
In true spirit of the competition, it gave some newer and less experienced members of the club, an opportunity to shine; two swimmers were proud of diving off the blocks competitively for the first time, in front of a packed spectator area.
Team spirit was exceptional, encouraging team members to speed up and slow down! to meet ‘cut off’ times. Scott Andrews and Lori-Anne Flemming, especially helped, encouraging younger members and answering nervous last minute questions. Thanks to Bethany Vanderwalle for stepping in just in time, as one novice suffered last minute nerves.
Jo Smith and Jane Evans stepped in seamlessly to manage the team, staying amazingly fresh and calm throughout, despite Daniel Evans slipping on the poolside and sustaining a nasty blow to his head; leaving him understandably shocked.
Possibly the highlight of the event was the reason given for Lawrence King’s disqualification; announced loud and clear over the Tannoy – pulling his trunks up!

Despite the places obtained (which were close) Great Yarmouth put in a good team performance, holding 4th position at the half way mark.
