In the centre of the IV Army attack was XV Corps, who would have the village of Flers in the centre of their line of advance.

XV Corps was assigned 18 tanks, all from D Company, for their attack which was intended to take Flers and Gueudecourt.  Their position extended from , on the right, Delville Wood to almost High Wood on the left. The tanks moved out from their assembly point at the Loop on the evening of the 13th September and reached their assembly point in Caterpillar Valley in the early hours of the 14th.
