The BARRETT family came from Bodham Street in Norfolk not far from Wells and the North Norfolk Coast. The earliest reference is for William BARRETT who was born there about 1772. His son John BARRETT (1803) was the elderly father (thought to be by his second wife) of Thomas BARRETT (1859) He married Sarah Jane MOSES (b.1869) known to the family as 'Granny Barrett'. By this time Thomas had moved to King's Lynn where he raised his family in Church Street. He made his living as a pedlar selling haberdashery all over Norfolk from a large basket weighing 6 or 7 stones that he carried on his head. Their son William Edgar BARRETT (b. 1898 d. 1966) married Lilly LUFF (b. 1897) 'Nan' to all those who knew her.

The LUFF family came from the other side of the Wash in Lincolnshire mostly around the Long Sutton and Gedney area. Francis LUFF from nearby Surfleet and his wife Susannah were raising their family in Gedney Drove End in the late 18th and early 19th Century. One of their sons Charles emigrated to America. Another son Richard LUFF (b.1793) was the father of Moses Richard LUFF (b 1835) his mother was Caroline ARNOLD (b.1838) from Aylesbury. It is known that Moses Richard was a gooseherd and is belived to have met his future wife travelling between goose fairs. Their son Moses LUFF (b. 1869) married Martha HAMMOND (b.1870) in Long Sutton. These were 'Nans' parents. In addition they also had Mabel, Albert, Winifred, Connie, Eva, Ivy, Ruby, Bernard and Isabelle. Martha HAMMOND married Walter Miller after the death of Moses and had 3 more children Elsie, Gladys and Kathryn.
