McDonnell Douglas Phantom
FG1 Fighter Bomber
The Phantom FG1 (F-4K) was developed from the US Navy's F-4J. Changes included British made avionics and Rolls-Royce engines. The more powerful Spey engines (rather than the General Electric J79s in the F-4J) were essential to allow operation off the relatively small deck of HMS Ark Royal, but degraded the aircraft's performance in some areas. 50 Phantom FG1s were built but nearly half of these were delivered to the RAF due to the run down in the RN carrier fleet.
14 Phantom FG1 of 892 Naval Air Squadron served on HMS Ark Royal between 1970 and 1979, with 767 sqn. acting as OCU.
A total of 29 Phantom FG1 were delivered to the Royal Navy, 7 of which were written-off. All remaining FG1s were transferred to the RAF in 1979.
