House Telephone No.29

House Telephone No.29

(Origin unknown)

Circa 1900

House Telephones were popular during the 1930's, and earlier years, in the larger homes where servants were employed. These telephone systems were entirely independant of the Post Office network, with no means of connection to the 'outside world'. They would be used to communicate with the various household departments (stables, gardening quarters, kitchen etc.), and would often use the old 'bell-push' wiring. A low resistance magneto bell was used for ringing (via a push button) and a local battery provided the current to work.
