Telephone No.332 with Watch-Receiver

GPO Telephone No.332 with 'Watch Receiver'

(Pheonix)

1959

Originally designed by Ericsson (Sweden), it was available from the late 1930's and is an improved version of the Telephone No.232, incorporating an internal bell set. It was available in black (shown here), Chinese red, Jade green and ivory, and some models also came with the 'cheeseboard' tray. My example here is fitted with a 'Watch-Receiver', a second earpiece for use with the other ear, to improve reception in a noisy enviroment. A plug for connection to an early Plan No.4 (plug and socket) wiring scheme is also shown. Other versions had a magneto generator fitted, with the handle protruding from the side, or bell on/off buttons fitted for use as an extension in the bedroom or elsewhere. Very early models had a side-entry handset cord (very rare).
