"Angling in Tayside"
A Definitive Guide to angling in Angus, Dundee and Perthshire.
Within Tayside's rich territory of mountain, moor,
farmland, seashore, cliffs and estuaries there are many great
angling opportunities waiting to be explored and enjoyed. We invite
you to come and share the wonderful fishing that is available.
Enjoy the diversity of scenery and habitat and the rich and varied
wildlife. Contrast sandy sea beaches to high mountain lochs and
mighty salmon rivers with well stocked trout fisheries. Tayside
has everything the angler dreams of and more! We are also proud
of our reputation for hospitality and look forward to meeting
you by the waters, sharing a few stories and maybe a dram!
This guide has been complied with the help and cooperation
of local angling experts; ghillies, guides, boatmen, angling clubs,
tackle shops, fishing providers and a host of others who have
a passion for angling and knowledge of the area. It is our aim
to help all anglers to enjoy fishing our waters. There are descriptions
of the major rivers and lochs and advice on favourite flies, baits,
techniques and seasons. Details of where to fish in rivers, lochs,
shore marks and sea angling charter boats together with booking
contacts and costs are included. We have tried to ensure that
the details given in this guide are accurate; however things do
change and we ask you to ensure availability and confirm prices
before booking to avoid disappointment.
In addition to the Guide there is a fold out map
and brochure that gives all the important details for fishing
in Tayside. The brochure is available free from any of the Angus,

Review by The
Flyfishers Annual 2002
Over the years we have seen many local-area angling
guides from a range of countries. This comprehensively detailed,
beautifully photographed and presented booklet by renowned Perthshire-based
guide, writer and tier Ally Gowans sets new standards for them
all. One day it will surely be prized in its own right by collectors.
Do not be misled into thinking that this is a small geographic
area offering limited angling opportunities. In fact few places
anywhere offer such a variety of quality fishing venues in close
proximity. They include several major river systems encompassing
water to suit every preference, and a variety of lochs and stillwaters.
Whilst Atlantic salmon are the jewel in the crown, there is excellent
trout angling, much of it a world removed from the intensive put-and-take
fisheries of the south. Grayling, coarse fisheries and sea angling
add further variety. Put these in a charming landscape steeped
in Scottish history and you have a tourist package hard to resist.
Review By Trout
and Salmon magazine December 2001
Well-known caster, fly dresser and salmon angler
Alastair Gowans has produced a guide to the fishing in Angus,
Dundee and Perthshire. All the main river systems are covered
down to the last detail together with essential phone numbers,
and fishery details. The section on fishing methods is exhaustive,
including all the visitor needs to know about flies, rods, lines
and when and where to use them. This new guide is well worth the
asking price for this valuable information alone. (The guide was
produced by Scottish Enterprise, Tayside, in conjunction with
the Area Tourist Boards)
