Windows Mobile 2003 - An Overview

Microsoft has recently updated its Pocket PC platform to Windows Mobile 2003. Benefits include:

New Zero Configuration Wi-Fi

New Zero Configuration Wi-Fi makes it easy for you to find and connect to any 802.11 wireless local area network (i.e. WLAN or Wi-Fi). When your Wi-Fi enabled Pocket PC encounters a hotspot—whether at home, work or a coffee shop, you’ll be asked if you want to connect. Once you connect, the settings are saved so that next time you are in the range of same wireless network, all you have to do is say “Yes”! The result is that you can now move easily from one wireless network to another without a lot of hassle. Going wireless on your Pocket PC has never been easier!

Bluetooth Support

Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC now has Bluetooth support* making it simple to link your Pocket PC and other Bluetooth-enabled mobile devices. For example, if you have a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone, you can now use it as a modem for your Pocket PC to access the Internet. You can also beam data such as contacts or pictures to other Bluetooth-enabled devices.

New Connection Manager

The new connection manager has been redesigned to allow you to more easily connect to your corporate network or to the Internet. Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC has added support for multiple VPNs, 802.1x, IPSec L2TP VPN and 128-bit SSL and 128 bit CAPI encryption. Together, these features help ensure that you don’t get locked out of your company’s secure network.

Enhanced Messaging Support

Composing email messages is easier than ever with Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC. The new auto suggest feature suggests email addresses as you type so that you find them faster. Auto-correct automatically fixes common spelling errors as you type. Signature support eliminates the need to re-type a closing for every message. Together, these features help you respond faster while you are on the go.

Enhanced Keyboard Support

Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC provides enhanced keyboard support for new devices with integrated or snap-on keyboards. Now you can accomplish all of the common tasks in Inbox right from the keyboard. New keyboard shortcuts for menu commands and navigation bring the familiarity of the desktop to the Pocket PC.

Enhanced Contacts

The optimized contact search in Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC enables you to find key contacts more quickly. Simply type any portion of either the contact’s first or last name and Windows Mobile 2003 will find the contact for you. New keyboard integration helps eliminate the need to use the stylus. New support for vCards in Inbox allows better integration with desktop Outlook.

Enhanced Calendar

Enhanced Calendar in Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC offers multi-day views with weekends highlighted in different colors making it easier to see your free time. Saturday is highlighted in blue while Sunday and holidays now appear in red. In addition, vCals can now be accepted into Calendar, so updating your schedule is easier than ever.

'Pictures' Image Viewer

Pictures is a great new digital imaging application for the Pocket PC. It allows you to see your photos individually, as thumbnails, or as part of a slideshow. Pictures also allows you to edit your photos-rotating, cropping, and adjusting the contrast and brightness–right on your Pocket PC. Pictures is great way to view and share your images with friends and family while on the go.

Windows Media Player 9 Series

Do more exciting digital media on your Windows Mobile 2003 based Pocket PC! Offering better performance and new experiences with your music, home movies and more, Windows Media Player 9 Series for Pocket PC now brings the high quality benefits of Windows Media 9 Series to the Pocket PC. Pocket Outlook

When you are out and about, Smartphone lets you receive e-mail and text messages, schedule appointments, manage your contacts, and organize your tasks — all with the familiar look and feel of Outlook on your desktop PC. Synchronizing your Outlook data with your desktop PC or to a Microsoft Exchange server is a breeze too. Just use ActiveSync® with over-the-air synchronization and keep your important information at hand.

Mobile Email and Text Messaging

Smartphone's unified inbox stores all of your incoming messages, including new e-mail, voice-mail, SMS text messages, and meeting requests. Responding quickly to messages is simple too. Smartphone recognizes URLs, e-mail addresses and phone numbers, so you just click on a URL to launch the Web browser, click on an e-mail to reply via e-mail, or click on a phone number to dial the number. It really is that simple! Smartphone also allows you to send multiple types of messages. You can send a text message as an e-mail to one person and an SMS message to another. If one of the recipients does not have the ability to receive an SMS message but can receive e-mail, Smartphone knows to send the text message in e-mail format.

Create and Access Contacts Just Once

Now your address and phone book can always be on hand, wherever you go. With Contacts, it's easy to store and find addresses, phone numbers, and other personal contact information that you have on Smartphone. Enter these in Outlook® on your desktop PC and sync with your device or enter them directly. ActiveSync® keeps all you data in one place, so if you update a contact on your Smartphone, that information will automatically be updated on your desktop PC the next time you synchronize. The days of keeping separate contact lists are over!

Viewing Appointments

Calendar provides all the options you need to help you schedule your busy life. When you synchronize your Smartphone with Outlook® via ActiveSync®, you will receive all your meeting requests via e-mail. You can quickly view your day's agenda or scheduled meetings for the entire month and respond to your new meeting requests at a touch of a button. You can even beam appointments from one device to another via infrared. Whichever option you choose, Smartphone can always keep your appointments and agenda up-to-date.

One Click Access to What Needs to be Done

Smartphone's one-view "To Do" list that you can synchronize with Microsoft Outlook's task list enables you to mark a task complete, re-activate it, unmark as complete, or delete it. You can also create a new task using 'predictive text input.' With predictive text input, a feature available in any text input field, Smartphone will suggest complete words as you enter text, saving you time and keystrokes.

Browse the Web While on the Go

Pocket Internet Explorer has been optimized for Smartphone, enabling you to browse Web content, including intranet sites and streaming video or music files — all in just a couple of keystrokes. Pocket Internet Explorer supports HTML and WAP, allowing you to surf, shop, or trade on virtually any site — and even pick up your Web-based e-mail from Hotmail®, AOL, or Yahoo. The added security features help protect online shopping or access to corporate data, bringing you the complete mobile Web wherever you are!

Instantly Swop Messages

Log on to Microsoft MSN® Messenger and "chat" with others from your Windows-Mobile™-based Smartphone. If you're familiar with MSN Messenger for the desktop PC, you already know how to use the mobile version. If not, it's easy to learn! Using your Internet connection, you can quickly send instant messages to anyone on your list of online buddies — even interact with multiple people at the same time. The chat window lets you read and write messages, and notifications alert you if others are trying to contact you. You can also see when your buddy is writing back to you, just like on your desktop PC. The "My Text" feature lets you quickly send frequently used messages with a single tap. Staying connected on the move can be this simple!

Watch Videos and Listen to Music

With Windows Media® Player and your Smartphone, your favorite digital entertainment is always within reach. Listen to .WMA music files by downloading files onto your desktop PC and transfering them to your Smartphone, or download files directly onto your device using wireless Internet services. You can play your favorite music in the background while you continue to read your e-mail or work in any other application. You also can play video files directly on the device — local files or those streaming from the Internet. News clips, music videos, film trailers — watch them all while on the go!

Customise the Look of your Smartphone

The Smartphone can be customized to reflect your personality. In addition to customizing the colors and pictures on the home screen, you can customize what information you get. You can also change the ring tones of the phone by downloading new ring tones or using your own .wav files. Smartphone allows you to assign a unique ring to an incoming call from a specific phone number, so you can know just by the ring tone who is calling. You can customize your home screen to show your calendar, inbox message counts, missed phone calls, and much more in a single view. This allows you to quickly access that information without having to navigate to a specific application, such as e-mail or voice-mail.

You Only Need One Hand To Use It

The Windows Mobile™-based Smartphone, with its rich messaging, Web and entertainment functionality, is designed for quick, one-handed operation — not just for making phone calls, but also for accessing the device's applications while you are on the go. Use one of the Smartphone's pre-programmed keys to launch Pocket Internet Explorer and start browsing the Web, open your inbox to read your new e-mail messages, or skip work altogether and start playing your favorite game. You can do a lot with the Smartphone, and you only need one hand to do it!

Download Games, Utilities and Applications

The Smartphone is expandable, allowing you to download applications that can make your life more productive and more fun. Download applications quickly and easily on the move, including games, home screens, music and video clips as well as ring tones. Your mobile operator can even send you updated software directly to your phone, meaning you can always have the latest updates. Smartphones also include a Secure Digital (SD) card slot, so you can store music, games and other files on the removable memory, making it possible to take all the files you need with you.

Security Helps Protect Your Connection

The Windows Mobile™-based Smartphone environment adheres to strict security standards (such as SSL, WTLS and PPTP) so it can help protect online transactions* and payments over the Internet. Shopping on the move has never been so easy. Connections to Internet and Intranet sites can be accessed via Pocket Internet Explorer, allowing you access to data on your corporate network.

Enter Text the Clever Way

Smartphone supports T9® predictive text entry, which enables you to enter text on your Smartphone using just one key press per letter. This makes it quick and easy to enter text into any field on your Smartphone. For example, you can spell out the word 'phone' by pressing, 7-4-6-6-3 on the keypad. T9 Text Input recognizes that the most used word matching that sequence is "phone." If more than one word shares the same numeric sequence, T9 Text Input provides the next most commonly used words.

Get In Sync Every Day - Instantly

Microsoft® ActiveSync® can synchronize the information on your Smartphone by connecting to your PC or server via a USB connection or over the air*, at any time you choose. Simply drop the Smartphone into its cradle and ActiveSync will automatically synchronize your Outlook® calendar, contacts and messages with your desktop PC. Additionally, you can specify what gets synchronized, and when. Best of all, you don't need to be near your PC to synchronize with Outlook. Smartphone's over-the-air synchronization can keep you up to date while you are on the go!

Exchange Data Without Cables

The Smartphone has the ability to connect via infrared to other infrared-enabled devices: Pocket PCs, PDAs, mobile phones, PCs, or other devices. Beaming is a great way to send your co-workers your electronic business card or a calendar appointment.
