Essentially a consumer version of the Psion netBook, the Series 7 was the
first (and long-awaited) Psion with a colour display that was aimed squarely
at the consumer rather than corporate market. The development of the Series
7 was a brave move for Psion, who had seen their last venture into the world
of laptop-style computers fail abysmally. However, this device is neither
a notebook nor a handheld computer, and is better classified within the
sub-notebook category.
Quality is outstanding, with blue leather binding surrounding the machine.
The large colour display is a joy to use (but unfortunately makes returning
to use a Series 5 rather a dull experience). Touch typing is easily possible
by way of the responsive keyboard and as the device is powered by a 15.5V
rechargeable battery, it can function for between 8 and 10 hours between
charges. Compare this with the 2-4 hour battery life of a notebook computer.
Expansion and upgrading the Series 7 is possible. The standard 16 MB of memory
is easily upgradeable to 32 MB and the inclusion of PC Card and CF Slots
allows, for example, the use of a modem and a 1GB MicroDrive, which will
provide ample space for all the third party applications that anyone could
ever need.
