Wall is essentially a traditional breakout game based upon the classic design
that became popular well before the advent of the PC. This is not the first
breakout game to be made available for the EPOC platform (I still use S5
Demolition on my classic Series 5), but it is certainly one that is feature
rich when compared to other versions.
Gameplay is simple, with the object being to get as high a score as possible
without letting the ball fall to the floor. The paddle is moved with
either the keyboard or the stylus to prevent this happening. The game is
made interesting by the use of different blocks - normal, concrete and
indestructible and the use of different bonuses that are released when certain
blocks are destroyed. Ways to improve your scores are included. For example,
with every 10,000 points gained, you are awarded an extra ball and bonuses
allow you to increase your score dramatically. Features normally associated
with modern PC variants are also to be found in Wall, including differing
ball and paddle speeds. However, it would be nice to see functions that increase
and decrease the size of the bat included in a future version.
The unregistered version of the game allows the user to play 5 levels, which
is enough to get the gist of gameplay and to decide whether the £14
price for registration is worth paying. Registration entitles you to 17 levels,
email support and free upgrades to future versions, which will contain more
levels and additional functions. This is the first program to emerge from
the Viking Games stable and hopefully the first of many if Wall is an example
of what the company are capable of developing. It runs very well on a Revo,
Series 5mx and Series 7 - the latest version includes colour support and
looks especially good. All in all, an excellent game and one that I can highly
recommend.
