Better ... by Modification

Here are my favourite things to do with a Midget:

Here's what I've done to the car over the years (it loves it!), starting at the front of the car; each modification has a brief evaluation comment by a Chartered Engineer:

11/16th anti-roll bar: the single best mod to do to any Midget - transforms cornering potential and makes the car much more stable e.g. on roads where the camber is constantly changing. Engineer's verdict: bar-none

Larger front disks: improved stopping power is essential on today's roads, esp. when other cars have ABS. My Frontline conversion has saved the car (and me) on at least 2 occasions on the M5, as well as being a bonus for competition. Engineer's verdict: braketabulous

Telescopic conversion (front): the Frontline kit provides a much stronger top wishbone with 2 deg negative camber for improved turn-in and a properly engineered damper mount. Engineer's verdict: controlaceous

5-speed conversion: turns the car into an easy long-distance cruiser (well, comparatively). Engineer's verdict: cruisiful

Anti-tramp bar: only needed on the driver's side - eliminates axle movement nonsense for those high speed (competition and otherwise) take-offs. Engineer's verdict: tramptastic

Panhard rod: with sticky tyres and harder cornering, BRB was moving far enough sideways on the rear springs for the outside tyre to contact the inner arch (explains my 'off' into the gravel at Harewood; yes it does); Paul and I created a Panhard from things lying around his workshop, incl 1/2 square tube and an MGB steering rack; seems to work well, but photos from this season will provide the evidence. Engineer's verdict: Panamazing.

Telescopic rear dampers: again, a Frontline conversion that's especially beneficial at high speed (Castle Combe!), keeping the car's and consequently my back-end under control. Engineer's verdict: diarr-velous.

A-series engine: still have one of those? Well tune it then - my recommendation is: 1330 (those +60 Metro pistons are the best ever fitted to production A-series), big-valve high cr head, Kent 276 cam (timed at +4), LCB, RC40 rear box, 1&3/4 inch SU on Titan or MG Metro manifold, Aldon AY100V dissy; should be good for close on 100bhp, with good torque and fuel consumption (better than standard!). Engineer's verdict: torque about bootiful.

KSeries conversion, for when the A-series just won't hack it. Engineer's verdict: Kmazing
