This C B Collett design for the GWR was a superbly practical design used for shunting, freight and branch and local line passenger services. Over 800 were built between 1929 and 1950 and were therefore the commonest GWR Class.
This example left Swindon Works in 1929 and worked mainly in London until it was purchased and brought to the SVR in June of 1971.
These little beauties have a special significance for me as they were puffing past my aunties house. When marshalled in the middle of a two car auto-train they meant holiday and seaside visits from Treforest to wonderful places like St Fagans and Barry Island. Many of these trips were on lines that no longer exist today.
