Gan Yem HOG* Records Photos Index

This page is about my Grandad Allin HOGGARTH.  I some times call him "the 2nd" to distinguish him from his father who was also called Allin.  The first Allin got his name from the surname of his mother Elizabeth ALLIN who married Lawrence John HOGGARTH (normally just referred to as John HOGGARTH.  On this page if I say Allin then presume I'm taking about Allin 2nd.

Allin was born on 21st January 1897 at Heulah farm near Dunsley which is a small hamlet to the west of Whitby in North Yorkshire.  His parents were Allin HOGGARTH and Mary STEPHENSON.  If you look at the census records for Dunsley you will find that the farm is sometimes referred to as Head Gains or Head Gays farm but I don't think there is any doubt that they are the same place.  Heulah farm can be seen on modern OS maps.

Birth Certificate of Allin HOGGARTH

The 1891 census shows Allin aged 4 with his family at Headgays farm, Dunsley born Dunsley.  In 1901 the family had moved (via Pickering perhaps judging by the birthplace given for Harry aged 3) to Low Newbegin which was just across a field or two from Newbegin Hall where Allin's Grandfather (John HOGGARTH) had lived until he died in 1856.  However Allin, at age 14, seems to have been elsewhere.

I had on this page that before he got married Allin worked around Houghall for George PECK and that some time between 1918 and 1933 Allin was working at Houghall on Roger STOREY's farm.  I seem to have blundered by the usual method of assuming the place I first found on the map was the right one.  See the email below which Kingsley BURN was kind enough to send to me in March 2003.

This is, I think the earliest photo I have of Allin.  It is made up as a postcard with the back divided for the correspondence on the left and the address on the right.  There is no indication on the back of the photographer though it has the number 28362 written in pencil.
It also says "Granda HOGGARTH + sisters Hannah & Lizzie. about 1910" but I think this was written on in the late 1900s.
As can be seen the picture is made up of three separate photos which might be years apart.  I understand this sort of Postcard type of photo became popular after 1905 which would make Allin 18+ years old.
In a letter of 9 Aug 1996 Ian KEELER said the sister on the left was Lizzie (Gertrude Elizabeth) who married Bert ARNOLD and died in the 1919 Flu epidemic and had children Ted (born April 1915) and Mary (born May 1917) who married a GRAHAM.  Thus the sister on the left would be Hannah who married Tom STEPHENSON and had first child Olive in 1913.
The picture on the left is an extract from The Cabbage Patch photo (cousin Dave in Calgary has the original I think, or maybe Ian KEELER) which is a photograph of a Wedding.  The bride is on the left and the man with the baby is Allin and the child is probably his first son Allen Robert Stephenson HOGGARTH who was born March 1910.
Since first issue of this page I've been sent a copy of the wedding cert. by Mary YOUNG (nee LEWIS) who also says that Madge and Sheila (Hannah's Daughters)  have told her that this is definitely the marriage of their mother Hannah HOGGARTH and Thomas STEPHENSON 21st Dec 1912 in Pickering.  Allin and Lizzie were the witnesses.

Family oral history (Uncle Ron?) says Allin met Alice at Old Acres farm (possibly either Old Acres Lodge Farm or Old Acres Hall Farm which Sylvia RAINE lead me to locate off the A689 to the east of Sedgefield ) - went to Sedgefield and Wolverton.

Marriage Certificate of Allin HOGGARTH and Alice WILDON

For those not familiar with the area Alice was living in Moorsholm and the wedding took place at Boosbeck, both being small places south of Skelton.  Shincliffe is just south of Durham City, between it and Bowburn.
Allin describes himself as a Hind (pronounced as in "behind") which was a farm worker and my dad often used that expression; some times as "farm hind".
It says that the father of Allin was deceased which he was not.  Maybe it was supposed to say that the father of Alice was deceased.  Her step father Arthur MARSH lived on for many years but as far as I know he was a worker at the Steel works in Middlesbrough and never was a miner.  Perhaps Alice knew her father.

It was said of Allin that he'd moved jobs for a penny.  Family oral history for Allin's movements gives:

1909 - Houghall/Heugh Hall near Shincliffe, Durham, with George Peck.
Bowburn - Laings' of Hill Top Farm - flooded out within weeks.
1913 - Old Quarrington, Coxhoe, ___ Ronald born.
1918 - East Herrington ___ George and Reginald born
Heugh Hall (Pit House) Roger Storey's Farm
Parkers of Trimdon - for one year, pay so poor living on savings.
Dickie Thompson's
1933 - Greenfield's of East Herrington - split between two houses.

Email from  Kingsley BURN, March 2003

Hi Bryan,

I have just stumbled upon your website and have a few memories that you might be interested in.

I am living in New Zealand now but I was born and bred in Bowburn.

When you mention Roger Storey's farm at Houghall - I think you really mean Roger Storey's farm at "Heugh Hall" pronounced "Yuff All" and not Houghall pronounced "Hoff ul". As far as I am aware Storeys farm is still there and operating near Heugh Hall just East of Bowburn at the base of "Big Wood".  Big Wood can be seen from all over County Durham and the small village (1 street of white houses) of Heugh Hall is on the other side of it.

Laings did live in the 'Hill Top Farm' which was above 'Big Wood' and later moved to another farm only 100 metres from Storeys farm. That farm is still going as well and is right beside the motorway. Anyway the Hilltop Farm was deserted since before I was born (1957) and had a massive bomb crater right in front of it. The bomb actually missed the farm by about 3 feet. I used to play in and around "The Deserted Farm" as we called it for years and have fond vivid memories of it. Unfortunately it was pulled down around 1970 much to my dismay. There was a girls name and a date written on one of the walls where some wallpaper had been ripped off but I can't remember what it read.

If you ever come across any photos of The Hilltop Farm I would love to see them. In the meanwhile if you need any more information about the history of that area you should talk to Sylvia Hammond - landlady of the Heather Ladd near Quarrington Hill. Sylvia and her local friends remember everything about local people and history. Pass on my regards if you do meet her . My name is Kingsley Burn (Baz) an old friend of Leo Cairns and Sylvia's son Jimmy.

Regards, Kingsley Burn

I don't recollect who gave me this photo of:

Alice WILDON
Allen Robert Stephenson HOGGARTH (5 March 1910 to 8 May 1988, Seaham)
Allin HOGGARTH
dogs - not known

I guess the photo is out by the stack of corn to get the required light.  Maybe the photo was taken by a traveling photographer.

The time would be about 1913 and on the back of the photo I have written "Ox Close Farm, Washington Co. Durham.

This Photograph "with pigs" comes courtesy of Cousin Dave HOGGARTH.

I've no good guess as to what the occasion is, when or where the photo was taken.

About all I might venture is that since Uncle Ron is known to have used a camera and Dave is his son then it was quite possibly Uncle Ron who took the pictures.

"with turnips" - comments as for the "with pigs" photo above.

This "4 Generations photo" below is Allin showing off his first grandchild Margaret Elizabeth HOGGARTH (daughter of Allen R. S. HOGGARTH) to his father Allin 1st..  It is probably at the christening since three at least of the men seen to have something in their lapels.  I always assumed that this would have been down at Hinderwell where the elder Allin lived with Beulah but there is no good reason why Allin 1st and Beulah should not have travelled to where the baby was - somewhere in County Durham.  As the baby was born 24th March 1935 the photo will be a few months after.

Shown left to right:
Reg HOGGARTH, my father, son of Allin 2nd
Beulah Allin HOGGARTH, half sister to Allin 2nd
Joe the taxi driver, no relationship known.
Allin HOGGARTH 1st
Allin HOGGARTH 2nd
Allen Robert Stephenson HOGGARTH, son of Allin 2nd
Margaret Elizabeth HOGGARTH, baby
Ethel CHAMBERS, the mother
George Henry HOGGARTH, son of Allin 2nd.
The photo was taken by Ronald HOGGARTH who was the other of the 4 sons of Allin 2nd
Note that the two elder Allins have an "i" whereas the other has an "e".  It used to be said that it was  only discovered that Allin 2nd had his name spelt with an "i" when they looked up his birth certificate to get his old age pension but since he was only 48 when this photo was taken that must be wrong.
It's odd that the "A"s on the left are written different to the "A" on the right in the address which was, I suppose where Allin was living then.  There is on current maps (see below) a hamlet or something called Hulam to the east of the A19 and Hutton Henry.
This photo comes from my families old box of photos and is marked on the back a "GRANDA & GRAMA HOGGARTH, West Horden Farm.

For some reason West Horden farm was owned by the National Coal Board and Allin was the manager there.  Whether he had any men working for him apart from his own sons I'm not sure.

During the war they had a Land Girl who stayed with them to work on the farm by the name of Winnie.  According to Doris Musgrove in 1997- Winnie GIBLIN started work with Allin at West Horden farm on the morning that Doris and Reg were married. Winnie had someone (seems like Doris) to get her address on her ration book changed. For this it was needed to say what her age was but Winnie would not say. She wrote it down and put it into a sealed envelope. Winnie lived at West Horden in the house of Allin HOGGARTH and his wife Alice (Reg and Doris in the other house) - later moving also to stay with them at Sheraton. According to the letter of Sylvia HARRISON (nee COSTELLO) of 4th August 2001 Winnie "had a mop of frizzy black hair and a round, red face. She used to come and stay at my nanny's with a lady we called Mary Fanny".

This is an extract from a group photo of the wedding of Reg HOGGARTH and Doris MUSGROVE at the Weslian Methodists chapel in Horden .  The date was 18th May 1945.

The girl between Allin and Alice is believed to be Margaret HOGGARTH the daughter of ARS HOGGARTH.

According to Doris there were German POW's who came to the farm (West Horden or Horden Hall?) daily to work and she told them that the war was over when she went to take dad his lunch.  Presumably 11 days before this photo was taken.

Doris said that Allin lived at West Horden farm from 1934 and moved to Sheraton in 1949ish.  Since I was born in Horden in November 1949 because my family were due to leave West Horden farm the day after, for dad to start work at Seaton Carew, I think Allin's move would have been after 1949.  There were two houses at West Horden farm.

Map showing Sheraton and Hulam.

The main road running north south is the A19.  The triangle to the left at Sheraton is where the road used to run when I would visit and Allin's cottage was just after the turn to the left with the house fronting onto the road with little or no front garden.  The cottage is still there but I'm told they have knocked two into one to make a useful sized house.  I expect they have also done away with the earth closet.

According to cousin Dave (or his brother Doug) before that cottage Allin lived in a house down the lane to the west.  After Allin died Winnie moved to a nearby house - along the lane to the east perhaps.

Allin was buried in grave 7,5Q Hutton Henry Cemetery, according to A. R. (Ron) Conlin who is/was a cousin from Alice's side of the family who was doing the family tree around 1980.

Death certificate for Allin HOGGARTH.  It has him as retired.  I was told he was still working up to 6 months before he died.
