Holyport Womens InstituteHolyport W.I. has a membership of about 30 people and has been meeting for the last 40 years. Our membership's ages range from 40 upwards. We are affiliated to the Berkshire Federation of Women's Institutes and the National Federation of Women's Institutes. We hold monthly meeting on the second Thursday of each month, at 7.45pm in the Holyport War Memorial Hall, except August, when we arrange more informal events.
At our monthly meetings anouncements of forth coming events are given. These include the dates for all our interest groups get togethers, the details for any of the outings to places of interest or theatre, fund raising events and venues and organisational details for events in the locality which we are going to support. We then listen to a Speaker (the topic of the talk or demonstration is announced in our 'Programme'). Next we stop for refreshments, which are provided by the members, taking it in turn, and have time for a good chat. Then just before we end the meeting we draw a raffle (which covers some of the running costs of the meeting) and the results of any competitions we have been held.
Apart from our Monthly Meetings, as a member of the Berkshire Federation of Women's Institutes and the National Federation of Women's institutes, there are other activities open to members to attend. Our WI is trying to arrange for a Travelling Tutor to provide us with a Craft Course on knitting. The WI has its own educational college, Denman College at Abingdon, where a huge range of residential courses are available.
Many of the Local events are given support by our members, in particular Holyport Fair and the Village Show.
