GORMAN INCIDENT
Date: October 1, 1948
Lt George F Gorman, of the US Air Force, was flying over Fargo on October 1, 1948, and encountered an unknown light or object. The event lasted 27 minutes. Gorman was getting in some extra night flying time when he spotted what he thought was a plane tail-light, but the control tower only reported one other plane in the vicinity, a Piper Cub which Gorman could also see. Gorman steered his F-51 towards the light and on two occasions was on a collision course with it when it shot away at astonishing speed. The incident was corroborated by the Cub pilot and two air traffic controllers who observed the incident from the ground.
