THOUGHTS ON WRITING

Writers work in many different ways. Some people plot everything out; others let their characters loose in certain situations and write about what happens. I work out how the story will end but not the characters' journey.

Some writers to work in silence; others must have noise. Some are inspired by beautiful surroundings; others want no distractions. I do not notice my surroundings. You need to find your own way.

Almost all good writing is produced in several drafts over a period of time. Twenty-seven is the most that I have taken.

Physical activity is usually recommended as a stimulant to writing.

Many believe that one should let ideas flow first and edit later.

All creative activities require a certain amount of time and practice. Writing is no different. If you can't set time aside, steal it - on the train, walking the dog or rocking the baby. Scribble notes. Put your ideas on tape. Memorise your story.

All writers need feedback but beware the opinions of friends and family. Writers' groups or internet sites like http://www.trace.ntu.ac.uk/ are very valuable.

Be prepared to disagree with others but if many people make the same point, think about it. Develop your own critical eye.

Finally, be prepared to disregard all the above! If what you do works, it works!
