Introduction Historians, Lyson and Thomas Bateman have both written about the FULWOOD's being an ancient family. They state the family originally came from the Parish of FULWOOD in Lancashire but subsequently they moved away and settled in Warwickshire.
As of January 1999 the origins of the Lancashire branch have not been researched. Tracing my family history has so far been concentrated exclusively on the main branch in Warwickshire, Derbyshire and my own branch centred around West Midlands. Comprising of the towns Wolverhampton, Bilston and Sedgley all formerly within the county of Staffordshire.
Origins There are accounts that the family name of FULWOOD originated in the 12th century when Drugo NORMANNUS Lord of the Manor of Whitley in Warwickshire who had two sons both named Robert.
Robert the eldest was named after Whitley Manor but Drugo Normannus' second and youngest son was named de FULWOOD after land which was acquired from Thurston de MONTFORT Lord of the Manor of Beaudesert Warwickshire in the reign of Henry II. AD 1154 to AD 1189.
Surname variations In the course of tracing FULLWOOD genealogy, quite a number of different spellings of the surname have been encountered. These are listed below:-
FFOLEWODE, FULWODE, FULLEWOOD, FULLEWOD, FULLWOODE, FULWOOD, FULLWOOD, FULWARD, FULLWARD, FULLWORD.
There are also possible connections to the surnames of OFFORD, FOULEHURST and FULFORD although this has not yet been substantiated.
Branches of FULLWOODs (in all spellings) are recorded as living in most counties of the UK and in almost every country around the globe.
Within the UK, FULLWOOD families have been recorded mainly in Derbyshire, Staffordshire, London, Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire. Although there are some records of FULLWOOD's in the Counties of Leicester, Hertfordshire, Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
In Warwickshire, which is the main and oldest branch, generations of Fullwood's have lived in this area over at least 600 years. They have lived in villages such as Aston Cantlow, Snitterfield, Little Alne, Great Alne, Wilmcote, Tanworth-in-Arden and Wootten Wawen .
