searing desert alternates boulder-strewn landscapes and great impassable
sand dunes. Some areas are awash with deeply eroded gullies, dry riverbeds,
and evaporated lakes. Others may contain a precious oasis surrounded by
thirsty vegetation. Sandstorms whip through the air chasing groups of tumbleweeds
or shaping the dunes. Bizarre, brightly coloured, dry vegetation and attendant
dragonflies abound. The occasional large Joshua tree casts a deep, elongated
shadow. Rocky crags get higher and more frequent as you approach the canyons.
