Teviotdale - 17 April 2004
Report by Derek Mclean

Ewan Leeming just pipped Peter Weall on the tie-break to win the 2004 Teviotdale. A possible three clean sheets in the Open class is a problem for an organiser. However a 10 minute penalty imposed by the Clerk of the Course for use of main beam in a Quiet Zone, reduced that to two.

Local team Peter and Dougie Humphrey non-finished because they went in to the hole that was left after we pulled the opening car out of the hedge on our way to TC13 (where we were expecting to have some Time Cards to score). We should have left George there, and he might have been able to stop Peter doing the same thing. That was just before Yair, in Section 13.

Neil Morrison and Matt Van der Meer non-finished because Matt seems to have a stomach problem. I believe David Thomson and Charles Samson had a similar problem.

Ian Guthrie and Max Hall went OTL. You should have cut and run, guys! I'm surprised you even found the TCs manned.

There was a small problem with car 1. The driver was supposed to be Charlie Brown, but he seems to have had a memory lapse and gone away on holiday, so a last-minute substitute was found for Neil Turner, in the shape of Robin Scott, in his recently refurbished Talbot Sunbeam.

Crew 24 was an old-stager Brian Hunter with Novice Mike Curry. Brian doesn't compete regularly these days. In fact I believe the last time he did was in this event four years ago. He offered to marshal, but I knew Mike was short of a driver, so I persuaded Brian to compete. He has a large penalty in the last section. That's because he did the 13-minute section in 8 minutes. He admitted to me afterwards that he hadn't been hanging about! Advice to Mike - take a good look at K 17.7.

I owe crew 19 an apology for mis-reading Max Hall's completion of the Entry form. He described the Car as (Make) Mini, (Model) Morris Minor. I didn't see the word Mini. I only read Morris Minor, and I wrote it in the Entry list as Morris 1000. Not entirely my fault I think, but apologies offered nevertheless.

A marshalling glitch at TC13, which held important clues and was a card  collect point, caused a few raised eyebrows, and gave the results team a bit of a hard time as well. An old friend of mine, that I lost touch with until recently.

Dave and Chris drowned out in the Cavers Carre ford, off route. They were heading north, which means it must have been between TC6 and TC7. They should have known they would be going back to previous route, so I don't understand why they went that way. Anyway, they seemed to be having fun up to that point.
