The Dawn Stand-to  -  The life of        IVB (Peter) Mills, QPM, CPM

At the tender age of 18, Peter Mills left his home in Norfolk in search of adventure and sailed for Kenya which, in the days before World War II, was the newest and least developed of Britain’s colonies - sparsely populated, with few roads and with large areas as yet untouched by civilisation.

He set out to explore, but all too soon, funds ran out and he was obliged to find a means of supporting himself and avoiding forced repatriation. In desperation, he wandered into the police station in a remote trading centre and sought the advice of the inspector in charge, After an hour’s discussion, he was persuaded to join the prestigious Kenya Police.  (ref: KPA)

Following a brief period of training and some early postings he was sent to the wild deserts of the Northern Frontier District.

Here, at the age of only 23, he was given command of a large force of native police with orders to defend a vast area and its people against raiding war-like tribes.

In clashes with cattle rustlers, murderous tribesmen, wild animals and criminals of all types in some of the remotest and most inhospitable land on earth there was a constant threat to his survival. But survive he did.

Promotion followed promotion and, as a high ranking officer, he played a crucial role in the war against the Mau Mau and was high on their 'hit' list.

This is a thrilling story of the last days of the Empire and one man’s account of his adventures in an untamed and often dangerous land peopled by eccentric settlers and primitive tribesmen. It is a chronicle of the courage and tenacity of one rugged individualist and his part in bringing civilisation to that land.  (rifle;    Army and Navy .577 Double)
