Abstract. What, exactly, distinguishes vague expressions and concepts from non-vague ones? I argue that answers to this question of the kind usually given are in adequate. The points from this negative discussion point in the direction of the inconsistency view on vagueness that I favor, which, in slogan form, is the view that it is constitutive of competence with vague expressions and concepts that they are sorites-susceptible.
