MISSION CLAYMORE 3

A report on the explosives and weapons that were used in Claymore was made. It was noted, "The blast effect from the 10lb charges was particularly severe and in every case buildings housing boilers were severely damaged".......and "the fuses were found to be very effective and in no case failed to ignite".

It was also noted "Bombs incendiary 11/4 lbs (described as resembling a red brasso tin) were most unsatisfactory owing to faulty cap mechanics". As far as can be discovered these incendiary bombs were NOT supplied by the organisation (SOE), but obtained from another source.

One of the most important successes of the raid was to lift the moral of the Norwegian people.  In the report regarding its success was the following "that two Norwegians just arrived in Stockholm from Norway have asked that this country be informed that the Lafoten raid was welcomed by Norwegians, who do not fear reprisals". They say the following: "The countries freedom is worth it".

Hemisphere

After the success of “Claymore” a follow up raid "operation Hemisphere" was planned and executed with the same sort of success, it displayed the effectiveness of these raids.

INDEX

HMS “Mansfield” ten Norwegian Marines and one Officer left Lerwick for Øksfjord on the 8th April 1941 arrived back on the 15th April 1941.  In the "Hemisphere" raid conducted on Øksfjord, a similar raid on a Fish Oil factory and result was had.  The factory was reported as being completely destroyed, but on this occasion there was no German opposition encountered.

There was the intention of attempting to capture any of the local Quisling leaders.  Unfortunately the "Hemisphere" group were spotted, before they could put this into action the Quisling leader escaped, but not before killing his wife with an accidental shot while trying to shoot the lock off a door to his house.

This was the only thing that marred an otherwise successful raid.  It was said that the Norwegian crew were disappointed that they were not able to encounter any German resistance.

Krebs and Enigma

Part of the intelligence resulting from the "Claymore” raid was a signal that had been intercepted by Bletchley Park noting that, "The patrol vessel Krebs had been sunk".
