SOE in the Far East 3

At a place called Tanjong Balai/Bali, this was approved on the 26th June 1941. At the rear right hand side was the weapons store and stores where my father worked. On the left hand side rear was the radio mast, further back down the garden path a small guard room on the island.

There were two causeway's back to the main island, to one side the sea, the other marches. These marshes were used as jungle training. The enclosed area in the sea for diving, this was enclosed for protection against sharks/freshwater crocodiles? This was some 20 miles from Singapore.

STS101

INDEX This is the building that housed 'STS 101'.   My father thought it was quite a good posting at the time.  In the picture, 1st and 2nd floor front was the Officers quarter's, in the right hand corner the jetty where SOE's boats were moored. The tower in the back ground contained the water supply and a bit back on the 2nd floor the wireless room. On the 1st floor at the back was the other ranks quarter's.

STS101

Part of this training was using mortars.  My father said that unfortunately the first two casualties (Passmore and a volunteer) were an own goal. He said as part of the training they gave that they abseiled from the balcony at the top .

There were two wireless transmission stations, one at Tanjong the other at Krangi/Kranji, now a War Cemetery. Tanjong was manned by 'Izzy' Issacs who's code name was 'Wite'
