The sinking of Submarine U33

German Cemitery

He said that U-33 had been  laying mines in the Clyde but had been spotted by chance whilst doing this by SS "Gleaner" a converted ship, and had been bombed by depth charges  from this ship.

He said that the Gleaner had attacked the sub and Dretsky had mined the sub as the crew left, but in the confusion some of the Naval "Enigmas" rotors had been placed in the crews pockets with the order ,"when in the sea you should dispose of them"

INDEX
Unfortunately or fortunately as the case may be, a set of rotors were brought aboard a rescue ship, complete with sailor they eventually found there way to Bletchley Park.

This enabled Bletchley to decode some of the German Enigma messages and allowed the navy to avoid submarine wolf packs for a few months
