Richard Bone does not appear in the 1851 Census of Devon - possibly in Cornwall.

*10 1851: Joy Street, Barnstaple almost certainly lists this family; Ann (then 39yrs) and children Ann (‘Nancy’, 13), Joseph (10), George (8), Rosetta (‘Rosina’, 6), Sarah (4) and Emily (‘Emma’, 1). Ann was then married to Joseph (33), a watch finisher. The parents’ place of birth is London, and the children at Oxford, London and Berkshire, except the youngest, Emily, who was born at Barnstaple. An unlikely venture for a widow, so Joseph may have already travelled ahead?

*14a This Diary (Click here) was very kindly supplied by Jacki D Adipietro, a great-granddaughter of John Phare. It is a priceless account, written by a person with first hand knowledge of events almost 100 years ago. While John's mother and three sisters perished, he and his father survived. Jacki is the guardian of a family heirloom: a piece of John's mother's shawl that was used to tie him to the rigging of the ship, which ultimately saved his life. There is also a link at the bottom to the descendants of the surving child.
*15 1851: A family all born in the Molland area of North Devon, and living at ‘Lydons’, Molland. The census family corresponds with the newspaper report, with the exception of ‘John’, who the census has as ‘Jane’. Was supposed to have taken another ship(see P & S J, 24th May 1855)

*16 Are these ‘Pine’ and ‘Pyne’ individuals of the same family? Their occupations are the same. 1851 census for Honiton, Devon, has a Nathanial Pyne (61yrs), a brickmaker, living with his wife Mary (54). They had four children living with them at that time, including James (14). It is quite possible, therefore, that these are of one family.

*21 Spokeman at Plymouth Court.
*22 Undoubtedly newlywed, so unable to confirm his origin. An Edward Tolley (16 yrs), however, appears in the 1851 census at Chulmleigh, N Devon, rather than Chudleigh, nr Exeter.

It appears that this Edward Tolley who survived the disaster, but losing his wife, was born on 16 Nov 1834, in Chumleigh, the son of John Tolley and Ann (nee) Harris. If so he appears to have remarried and appears in the 1891 Devon census as follows.
Edward Tolley 56 Head Tailor/Postmaster 99 Street Post Office Chulmleigh
Elizabeth Tolley 60 Wife
Elizabeth Ann Tolley 31 Dau (Married Rowland H G Hill from Devizes)
Emma A Tolley 21 Dau
Louisa C Tolley 19 Dau
Florence H Tolley 16 Dau
The ages, places of birth and occupations certainly correspond. Many thanks to Phillip Tolley for this additional information and the link to his Tolley site ...

*25 No other information known. Vivian, however, is a name often found in North Cornwall, and in the initial newspaper report, her name is between those of William Treleavan and the Wilces, all of whom were from Wadebridge (albeit the list is largely alphabetical!!).
*26 Described as a man of ‘delicate and sickly’ disposition. An anomaly exists in that the newspaper states that the youngest of his six children fell from his mother’ arms into the sea and was lost, yet the details of survivors suggest that she survived and an elder son did not.
Information received from Midge Waters: the surname should be WATTERS, not WALTERS.

*27 "Reports state that these individuals were from ‘Amble’, now identified as what is properly called ‘Chapel Hamble’ at St Kew. George was the eldest son and would have been 22 at the time of the wreck. His father, a well established farmer, had died in 1850, leaving his widow with seven children. Jemima, Rachel and Alfred were his younger brothers and sisters and they would have been 18, 15 and 11 in 1855. "
