Michael Pennie Michael Pennie is a sculptor, working mainly in wood, trained at the Royal College of Art and a Rome Scholar. His sculpture is represented in major national and private collections. He has exhibited widely, notably at the Tate Gallery and the Hayward, he has had many solo exhibitions throughout Britain. During the last 12 years Pennie has made annual visits to the sculpture-making people of West Africa, particularly Ghana, Burkina Faso and Cote d’Ivoire the three Countries of the lands of the Lobi, a people noted for their sculpture, craftwork and their domestic architecture. Pennie is the curator of three exhibitions of African art and life: African, Lobi, and West African Journeys, all have toured in the south of England. Lobi together with Michael Pennie; carving and Drawing 1976 - 1995 has also been seen at the National Museum and Art gallery in Accra and Lobi went on to the regional museum in Bolgatanga. During 2000 West African Journeys was also exhibited in Ghana, at the British Council in Accra and again in Kumasi. Michael Pennie is a professor and was formerly Subject Leader in Sculpture at Bath Spa University College. |
