Hot Air Balloons

Quest: Using just the cheapest available peddle bin liners and cellotape - design and make a hot air balloon.

Your teacher will help you fly your creation.

Equipment required:

  • Five bin liners (small)
  • cellotape
  • clay drainage pipe
  • supporting tripods
  • electrical extension cable
  • hot air paint stripper

Aim: to produce a balloon shape that will contain a lot of hot air but uses the least amount of plastic bin liner.

Sketch some shapes - talk to your maths teacher about volumes, shapes and surface areas.

How to make your balloon

Cutting along the dotted line will produce an oblong shape. You can use this as a basic buidling block for your balloon.

Safety:

The hot air stripper achieves high temperatures and if misused will cause severe burns. This piece of equipment should be only used by a competent adult.

Flying the balloon

(with a responsible adult)

Support the clay drainage pipe on a tripod. Using considerable care place your balloon over the end of the pipe.

Place the electical paint stripper (hot air device) underneath. Start with a low setting to inflate the balloon.

Increase the heat - make sure the plastic does not melt.

Release the balloon
