"Britain's spy chiefs warned the Prime Minister less than two months before September 11 that Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaeda group was in 'the final stages' of preparing a terrorist attack in the West, it was disclosed yesterday....Their warning was included in a report sent to Tony Blair and other senior Cabinet Ministers on July 16.....The JIC [Cabinet Office Joint Intelligence Committee] prediction of an al-Qaeda attack was based on intelligence gleaned not just from MI6 and GCHQ but also from US agencies, including the CIA and the National Security Agency, which has staff working jointly with GCHQ. The CIA sometimes has a representative on the JIC. The contents of the July 16 warning would have been passed to the Americans, Whitehall sources confirmed. ... John Scarlett, who took over as chairman of the JIC a few days before the attacks in America, told the committee, according to the report, that there was 'an acute awareness in the period before September 11' that bin Laden and his associates 'represented a very serious threat' and that there was 'planning activity'..."

How many more 911 contradictions and absurdities are audiences across both sides of the Atlantic supposed to calmly consume without question, as the Bush Administration manipulates the media in order to terrorise US citizens into surrendering their basic liberties?

A bizarre piece arising on ABC News and relayed by the BBC on 7 June (also reported in the London Times the next day) is just but one of the latest examples of stunningly unquestioning media reporting of the bogus 'war against terrorism'.

According to these reports alleged lead hijacker Mohammed Atta spoke to Johnelle Bryant, a government official at the US Department of Agriculture, for more than an hour in the spring of 2000 and:

"He pulled out a wad of cash... and started throwing money on my desk. He wanted that picture really bad," Ms Bryant told ABC. "He asked about the Pentagon and the White House and I pointed them out. He said this man [Bin Laden] would someday be known as the world's greatest leader."

Without offering any analysis of this situation in relation to the official Sept 11 line, the London Times 8 June also confirms Atta's reported question to Ms Bryant: "How would America like it if another country destroyed that city and some of the monuments in it?"

What? Just how much of the official line are the people of America expected to believe before they start asking penetrating questions?

Remember how sophisticated the Sept 11 operation was supposed to be - so much so that the CIA and the FBI couldn't find any specific clues? Now we're told Atta was having ridiculously indiscreet discussions with a US government department official well before the strikes. This wasn't just some 'out of line' junior member of the group, this was its alleged leader.

Despite demonstrating an ability to flagrantly advertise their intentions, the only person facing charges of complicity in relation to Sept 11 is Zaccarias Moussaoui. Moussaoui was arrested on other grounds before the attacks and his investigation at the time was blocked by the intelligence agencies themselves.

After seven months of post Sept 11 investigation deploying 4,000 agents, and with not a single person arrested and formally charged with involvement in the attacks since that date, here's the unequivocal conclusion reached in April by Robert Mueller, the head of the FBI, regarding the sophistication of the hijack operatives (as he publicly confirmed in a speech at the Commonwealth Club of California):

"...the hijackers did all they could to stay below our radar.......They dressed and acted like Americans, shopping and eating at places like Wal-Mart and Pizza Hut, blending into the woodwork all the while. ...[The hijackers used] meticulous planning, extraordinary secrecy.... In our [seven month] investigation, we have not uncovered a single piece of paper -- either here in the United States or in the treasure trove of information that has turned up in Afghanistan and elsewhere -- that mentioned any aspect of the Sept. 11 plot. The hijackers had no computers, no laptops, no storage media of any kind [Mueller omits to mention Moussaoui's own computer that lower ranking FBI agents were officially blocked from searching pre-Sept 11, as subsequently reported widely in the media NLPWessex ].... In short, the terrorists had managed to exploit loopholes and vulnerabilities in our systems, to stay out of sight, and to not let anyone know what they were up to beyond a very closed circle."

Staying below the radar? Acting like Americans? Blending into the woodwork? Staying out of sight? Not mentioning any aspect of the Sept 11 plot outside a very closed circle?

Extraordinary secrecy?

Like discussing with a government official face to face the destruction of national monuments in Washington? Like trying to apply to the US government itself for funding to finance flying lessons and highly unusual aeroplane purchases? By an Arab national who reports that he has been hanging out in Afghanistan, the notorious terrorist harbouring country shelled by Bill Clinton?

Discretion on such matters should have been key for professional terrorists. Yet Atta even went as far as discussing with the government official the fact that al Qaeda 'could use memberships from Americans'. Even though Ms Bryant claims that she had never heard of al Qaeda or bin Laden at the time, that is not something that Atta himself should have reasonably assumed: "What the American public most knows about Afghanistan is that the Taliban have given refuge to Osama Bin Laden, billed in the Western media as the world's number one terrorist." (Pacific News Service, August 15, 2000 ).

Discretion, however, was not the name of the day for Atta. During what ABC describes as Mrs Bryant's 'strange encounter' he even gave her his real name and allowed her to take notes. Clearly this was truly an operation of 'extraordinary secrecy' with (to mock the words of FBI chief Robert Mueller) not a 'single piece of paper ..... that mentioned any aspect of the Sept. 11 plot'. Obviously then, first hand notes taken by a US government department official simply don't count.

Ms Bryant reports that she had gone to the FBI regarding the incident once Atta's photograph appeared in the press after the attacks (presumably last September). Ms Bryant, who claims to have worked at the USDA for 16 years, says she did not report the encounter at the time that it occurred the year previously. "I think it's very important that the American people realise that when these people come to the United States, they don't have a big 'T' on their forehead" said Ms Bryant. No, they just talk openly in a government office about terrorist networks and about cutting your throat. Then they threaten to destroy national monuments in the capital city.

Atta visited Ms Bryant on another occasion as did two more of the Sept 11 hijackers according to her account.

Apparently not only were these amateurs able to avoid the suspicion of Ms Bryant, they were also able to fool America's multi-billion dollar intelligence services. So, sure, it would still be a big help to the CIA and FBI if the hijackers really did have a big 'T' on their forehead as well, given this level of 'extraordinary secrecy' for the operation.

Either this USDA official is lying (if so we need to know why) or senior officials at the CIA and FBI are.

There appears to be no comment from the mainstream press on this awkward choice, however. According to CNN, ABC claim that Ms Bryant passed a lie detector test.

Meanwhile braver journalists are prepared to produce more forceful analysis on the bizarre circumstances surrounding Sept 11 and the closed congressional hearings. Whilst the editorial board of the 'World Socialist Web Site' is hardly likely to give a right wing US government much benefit of the doubt in any circumstances, their forthright commentary on this situation is largely deduced from excruciatingly embarrassing evidence derived from more conservative sources. This is their conclusion:

"There is growing reason to believe that at least some of the September 11 hijackers had ties to American intelligence agencies. They were not overlooked. They were shielded.... Much of the press and many leading congressmen know that the congressional investigation is a fraud, an effort to cover up the behind-the-scenes involvement of US intelligence agencies in September 11. Their refusal to expose this, whether out of fear of retaliation or out of loyalty to the state apparatus, makes them complicit in criminal actions by the American government against its own citizens.... The media reports utter absurdities with a straight face... A report in the New York Times technology section June 3 serves to refute all such fictions. The article cites the annual wiretap report issued by the Administrative Office of the United States Courts, noting that in 2001, every single one of the 1,491 applications by federal police agencies to wiretap phones was granted. Since 1991, of the 12,661 requests for wiretapping submitted to the courts, all but three were authorized. So much for the claims that the Zaccarias Moussaoui investigation was suppressed because of fears of opposition from the special federal court dealing with intelligence spying—whose criteria are even less restrictive than those of the regular courts."

Does this analysis simply constitute extravagant supposition from the left? How does the accusation of 'shielding' square with the facts? A Reuters report, 2 June, with the plain speaking headline of 'CIA Knew Two Sept. 11 Hijackers Were in U.S', strongly suggests that it does:

"Months before the Sept. 11 attacks, the CIA knew two of the hijackers were in the United States and that they were connected to the al Qaeda organization, Newsweek reported on Sunday..... The magazine said the CIA did nothing with the information, neither notifying the FBI, which could have tracked the two men, or the Immigration and Naturalization Service, which could have turned them away at the border.... for a year and nine months after the CIA identified them as terrorists, Alhazmi and Almihdhar lived openly in the United States, using their real names, obtaining driver's licenses, opening bank accounts and enrolling in flight schools. On the morning of Sept. 11, they boarded one of the four hijacked airliners, American Airlines Flight 77, and crashed it into the Pentagon.... Newsweek said the information was held at the CIA's Counterterrorism Center, the base camp for the agency's war on bin Laden... Newsweek said FBI officials have prepared a detailed chart showing how agents could have uncovered the terrorist plot if they had learned about Almihdhar and Alhazmi sooner, given their contacts with at least five of the other hijackers."

Fortunately not all Americans are continuing to buy the official line. Billionaire American financier George Soros was interviewed for the London Times 14 June. He accuses the Bush Administration of manufacturing the latest 'dirty bomber' scare story in order to promote an authoritarian right-wing agenda, and he compares the current situation in the country with that of the Nazi era in Germany.

Dissent has now even emerged within the US air force. This new development is especially sensitive for the administration because it is the US air force which lies at the centre of speculation as to why fighters were not scrambled on time to intercept the hijacked planes on Sept 11. This failure was despite the fact that since July 2001 the country had been on a security alert described as the 'most urgent in decades' according to US counter-terrorism officials cited in the Washington Post 17 May.

Associated Press reported 3 June that a long serving US air force officer (a former 'Desert Storm' navigator, quite possibly with personal knowledge of fighter scrambling procedures) had written to his local newspaper claiming that: 'Bush knew about the impending attacks on America. He did nothing to warn the American people because he needed this war on terrorism'.

Lt Colonel Butler, now facing disciplinary action, is considering retiring from the service. His wife confirmed to their local newspaper that her husband had since received messages of support from both friends and strangers alike.

And what's going on here?

When we reached the exit, I asked the SS man why we had been ejected, and he told me we were being charged with disturbing the peace. While on the World's 'most wanted list', no attempt was made to arrest him during his two week stay in the hospital, shedding doubt on the Administration's resolve to track down Osama bin Laden. Barely a few days ago Defense Secretary Rumsfeld stated that it would be difficult to find him and extradite him. Its like 'searching for a needle in a stack of hay'. But the US could have ordered his arrest and extradition in Dubai last July. But then they would not have had a pretext of waging a war."

US sources would not furnish any details beyond saying that the two discussed 'matters of mutual interests.' What those matters could be is a matter of pure conjecture.....
