"Senator,
if you truly represent the best interests of the people, I want
you and your colleagues to pass a law which grants absolute
immunity from prosecution or punishment to anyone covered under
the National Security Act, the CIA Act, the Espionage Act or
any applicable military regulations so that they can come forward
and speak first-hand of the crimes which are destroying the
fabric of this nation. If you truly represent the people you will
see to it that Nuremburg style trials are held in full view
of the world and the guilty are brought to justice. And you will see that
intelligence agencies of this government are either abolished or
so drastically restructured that crimes of this nature can never
happen again."

"During
Bush's first months in Langley, the CIA under orders from Henry
Kissinger launched a campaign of destabilization of Jamaica for
the purpose of preventing the re-election of Prime Minister
Michael Manley. This included a large-scale campaign to foment
violence during the election, and large amounts of illegal arms
were shipped into the island. $10 million was spent on the
attempt to overthrow Manley, and at least three assassination
attempts took place with the connivance of the CIA. During his
year at Langley, Bush was especially forthcoming towards Wall
Street, above all towards the family firm. On at least one
occasion, Bush gave an exclusive private briefing, including
forecasts on the future development of the world energy market,
for partners and executives of Brown Brothers, Harriman. Such an
incident, it is superfluous to point out, entails the gravest
questions of conflict of interest."

Times Magazine writer Christine Toomey has won the Amnesty
International Media Award for the best magazine article of the
year. Her investigation last November into The School of the
Americas, the US military academy in Georgia which numbered some
of Latin America's most notorious dictators and human rights
abusers among its graduates, was hailed by the judges as 'a
well-balanced and original piece that powerfully exposed the link
betweeen the USA and human rights violations in South America.' Click above to read her compelling report"

"Mr
Kissinger has been formally asked by an investigating judge in
Chile to respond to questions about the killing of an American
citizen, Charles Horman, in the wake of the coup. The story of
the journalist and film-maker's death became the basis for the
1982 film Missing.... Ever since the arrest of General Augusto
Pinochet in Britain in 1998, there have been attempts to show
what part the US government played in the coup that brought him
to power. Of particular interest has been the issue of whether
the US effectively gave the military dictatorship carte blanche
in dealing with dissidents, even if they were American
citizens."

"The US
Embassy in Belarus has admitted that it is pursuing a policy
similar to that in 1980s Nicaragua, in which anti-government
Contra rebels were funded and supported. President Lukashenko, a
dictatorial Communist, is heading for victory in presidential
elections on Sunday. ... The ambassador's disclosure has
coincided with moves by the Bush Administration to gain increased
political influence in Eastern Europe and the Balkans and with
reports in several European newspapers, which said that former US
servicemen believed to be working for the CIA were escorted with
Albanian guerrillas from a village in the Former Yugoslav
Republic of Macedonia earlier this year.... President Lukashenko
is popular and most Belarussians fear that a new, pro-Western
leader would bring the poverty experienced by many Russians and
Ukrainians after the transition to a market economy."

"In
1990, during Bulgaria's first post-Communist elections,
professional agitators, backed by millions in covert financing
from the US, organized massive street protests that ultimately
succeeded in unseating the duly elected government. Even though
the renamed Communist party had won the overwhelming majority in
voting which western observers on the scene widely agreed had
been fair, the US (through the CIA) used the mobs to intimidate
and ultimately hound officials from office. 50
Not coincidentally, one of the senior
members of the Bush administration who coordinated the Bulgarian
action was none other than James Baker the man who
spearheaded the Bush campaign's post-election response to Gore's
challenges in Florida. 51 ... "

"The
Dutch government has released a report that details
the alliance
between the United States and the Islamic effort to help Bosnian
Muslims. The report determined that the United
States provided a green light to groups on the State Department
list of terrorist organizations to operate in
Bosnia. This included the Lebanese-based
Hezbollah. For the European Union, the U.S. effort marks a stain
that calls into question Washington's war on terrorism."

"...[America's] easy answer for Bosnia's
ills was 'lift and strike' - re-arm the Bosniaks (mostly Bosnian Muslims) and Croats
and bomb the Serbs. At first arms were sent to Bosnia via
Croatia, but the Croats were reluctant to arm the Bosnian army
with sophisticated weapons, so America took it upon itself to
deliver arms directly to the Bosnian Muslim Army - the ABiH. ..These covert air drops began at
the start of 1995. ... American intelligence-gathering in the
region was conducted on a huge scale. ...This
intelligence-gathering was aimed as much at the UN as the Serbs,
and intelligence was passed directly on to the Bosnian
Government. Former
UN Commander in Bosnia General Sir Michael Rose was aware that
the Americans were secretly bugging his office....."

"'Today,
the circumstances which we have created here have changed. Today,
it is absolutely necessary to guarantee the stability of
Macedonia and its entry into NATO. But we will certainly remain
here a long time so that we can also guarantee the security of
the energy corridors which traverse this country' [said General Michael Jackson, commander of NATO forces
in Macedonia] ....It is clear that Jackson is referring to the 8th
Corridor, the East-West axis which ought to be combined to the
pipeline bringing energy resources from Central Asia to terminals
in the Black Sea and in the Adriatic, connecting Europe to
Central Asia. That explains why the great and medium-sized
powers, and first of all Russia, don't want to be excluded from
the settling of scores that will take place over the next few
months in the Balkans".

"With
deliberate archness, Hitchens builds a case that Kissinger's actions in office qualify him for
prosecution as a war criminal. In the wake of World War II,
Japanese soldiers and politicians were hanged for less, and on
much scantier evidence than exists about Kissinger. Step by step,
Hitchens gives us verse and footnote on how Kissinger promoted
policies that he had prior reason to believe would kill hundreds
of thousands of civilians in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. Chapter
by chapter, Hitchens goes on to detail Kissinger's complicity in
a litany of coups, assassinations and mass killings in
Chile, Bangladesh and Cyprus. Not to
mention his sanctioning of the bloody invasion of East Timor ('Timor was not a significant policy
problem' - Kissinger) and many other grisly adventures in US
foreign policy."

"The
Department of State is under growing pressure from the Central
Intelligence Agency to destroy its inventory of an official
history of U.S. relations with Greece during the 1960s and to
replace it with a new, sanitized version...The sticking point
appears to be a handful of documents that allude to CIA
intervention in the electoral process in Greece some 35 years
ago. ... Director of Central Intelligence George J.
Tenet
has gotten
personally involved in the matter, attempting to enlist the help
of Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage
in blocking
release of the official history. According to one source, Mr. Tenet contacted Mr.
Armitage
to discuss the
matter as recently as the night of September 10, at a time when
his attention might have been more profitably directed elsewhere.
A State Department official would not confirm or deny that the
September 10 conversation took place."

"How
appropriate that John Negroponte is Bush's ambassador at the
United Nations. This week, he delivered America's threat to the
world that it may 'require' to attack more and more countries. As
US ambassador to Honduras in the early 1980s, Negroponte oversaw
American funding of the regime's death squads, known as Battalion
316, that wiped out the democratic opposition, while the CIA ran
its 'contra' war of terror against neighbouring Nicaragua.
Murdering teachers and slitting the throats of midwives were a
speciality. This was typical of the terrorism that Latin America
has long suffered, with its principal torturers and tyrants
trained and financed by the great warrior against 'global
terrorism', which probably harbours more terrorists and assassins
in Florida than any country on earth. The unread news today is
that the 'war against terrorism' is being exploited in order to
achieve objectives that consolidate American power."

"The
Taliban are a creation of America's Central Intelligence Agency
(CIA) in cooperation with Pakistan's Inter-Service Intelligence
(ISI), said leading US South-Asia expert Selig Harrison. Harrison
spoke in front of an audience of security experts in London in a
conference on 'Terrorism and regional security: Managing the
challenges of Asia' in the last week of February, just before the
Taliban's assault on the Buddha statues of Bamiyan. As a senior
associate of the Carnegy Endowment for International Peace from
1974 to 1996, he had been in close contact with the CIA......
After the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, the CIA had
encouraged militant Islamic groups from around the world to come
to Afghanistan. The USA and its allies provided 3 billion dollars
for building up the largest ever funded 'resistance movement'.
.........The CIA had left much of the decision how to use the US
funds to Pakistani specialists....'The CIA still has close links
with the ISI', said Harrison. "

"The
Pentagon has set up a covert unit to wage an information war that
could include feeding
false stories to foreign media, according to a report
yesterday. A senior Pentagon official was quoted as saying that
the information battle 'goes from the blackest of black
programmes to the whitest of white'. The proposals appeared to
have been leaked by Pentagon officials who fiercely oppose them
and hope to ensure widespread outrage at home and abroad and increased scepticism about
US statements on the War on Terror... It was unclear under
what circumstances false news items would be relayed, but the
plan is to influence public opinion and policymakers in the
Middle East, Asia and even Western Europe....Among the suggestions are that the
job of disseminating disinformation be undertaken by outside
groups that reporters would not immediately realise were linked
to the Pentagon.....One complication could be US laws that ban
the Pentagon and CIA
from undertaking
propaganda activities in America.... The Defence Department could
fall foul of the law if stories placed by the unit are picked up
by the American media and later found to have been false. In the
1970s CIA disinformation was picked up from the
foreign media by American news organisations..... Victoria Clarke, the Pentagon
spokeswoman, would not discuss the Office of Strategic Influence.

is becoming increasingly clear that George Bush [Snr], operating largely behind

"We're talking about 10 to 20 thousand
covert actions [the CIA has performed since 1961]. .....We're
talking about 1 to 3 million people killed in these things....The people that are dying in these
things are people of the third world. That's the common denominator that
you come up with. People of the third world. .....Most of them
couldn't give you an intelligent definition of communism, or of
capitalism...We are killing, and killing, and terrorizing
people....."
John Stockwell, former CIA official and author, 1987
"Somewhere
between America's spies and commandos is a small group of men and
women like Johnny 'Mike' Spann, the CIA paramilitary officer
killed by rioting prisoners in Afghanistan [Nov 2001].....They
come from within the CIA's Directorate of Operations, whose
primary mission is to conduct clandestine intelligence gathering. One branch, the Special
Activities Division, is home to the CIA's offensive punch.
Officers in this division are called upon when the president
wants covertly to advance U.S. foreign policy, influencing a
foreign government without any signs of U.S. action. Inside the division are
intelligence officers who can create economic and political
disruption in foreign countries, and write propaganda to
influence foreign elections.
Unlike
the Green Berets, these officers can operate without uniform or
identification as an officer of the U.S. government. If one is
caught or killed, the government can plausibly deny their
use."
National Post, 3 Dec 2001
"From
Richard Nixon to Bill Clinton, it has been an article of faith
for executive branch policy makers that U.S. weapons exports are
only made to responsible allies who use these systems for
legitimate defensive purposes. This report puts that thesis to
the test by documenting U.S. weapons deliveries to 50 current
ethnic and territorial conflicts. Contrary to the conventional
wisdom in Washington, official
U.S. government data on arms transfers provides overwhelming
circumstantial evidence that U.S.-supplied weaponry is at the
center of many of today's most dangerous and intractable
conflicts:
- In the past ten years, parties to 45 current conflicts have
taken delivery of over $42 billion worth of U.S. weaponry... Of
the significant ethnic and territorial conflicts going on during
1993-94, 90% (45 out of 50) of them involved one or more parties
that had received some U.S. weaponry or military technology in
the period leading up to the conflict...Two of the men convicted in
the 1993 World Trade Center bombing received weapons training in
Afghanistan under the direction of fundamentalist Islamic forces that were armed and trained by the CIA.
