For those unfamiliar with the area, Little Glemham is a rural village with a population of about 190 and is situated near the coast of Suffolk, 16 miles North of the county town of Ipswich

Nearby places of interest include the market town of Woodbridge, noted for its Tide Mill and the Sutton Hoo archaeological site, and Snape Maltings, home of the Aldeburgh Festival.

We have many fine listed buildings, including a 19th century school house, the Grade 1 St. Andrew's Church and the Grade 1 Glemham Hall, once the home of Sir Thomas Glemham. Sadly, the school has long since closed and is now a private house and we no longer have any shops or a Post Office, either.  Our local pub, The Lion, a fine listed building in the centre of the village, was under threat of being closed and turned into a private house, however it has now re-opened under new management who have worked hard to build up a flourishing business.

 

The problems which concern us are probably typical of a rural English village and include:

 

· Road safety, particularly following a Government decision to cancel a proposed by-pass scheme for our village and several neighbouring ones. During 2002, the Council took part in a route study for the A12 road, which bisects the village. This has resulted in a 30 mph speed limit and other minor changes which should improve safety but which fails to address all the issues of this important strategic route.  A by-pass scheme for Little Glemham, together with the neighbouring villages of Marlesford, Stratford St. Andrew and Farnham, would have helped enormously, but Suffolk County Council have declined to put it forward for possible Government Funding.

 

· Rights of way.

 

· Facilities for young people - a community area for the younger children and meeting facilities for the 13-18 year olds. We lease and maintain an area of "open space" for use by the community. We provided a shelter for young people some time ago, and have now completed the installation of safety fencing and play equipment.  We have recently added two sets of goalposts, in response to public demand.

 

· The upkeep of the village hall. A £22000 refurbishment, funded mainly by grants, was completed in 2002, and has brought the hall kitchen and access up to the latest standards, but there is further work to be done in tidying up the site and ongoing maintenance.  A new Management Committee has been formed and is organising regular events.  For details of the latest events, please see the Village Noticeboard page.

On the plus side, many social events are well supported. Many events are held in the grounds of Glemham Hall throughout the year.
