NAVIES IN TRANSITION

THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE WORLDS NAVIES, THE TECHNOLOGY AND THE PEOPLE WHO MADE IT HAPPEN

ENTER HERE

The period in the development of the worlds navies when ship design passed from an art to a science. In this golden age of technology wooden walls were replaced first by iron then by steel, sail gave way to steam and guns just got bigger. It was these technological advances that gave Queen Victoria true ownership of the seas. It was however also the era when the latest technology was available to anyone who was prepared to pay. Thus was born a global arms industry where even the smallest navies could field the latest technologies.

The Aim of this site is to provide an online resource for the period of naval transition from wooden walls through ironclads and pre-dreadnoughts to the great War (1837 to 1914). As this site grows I hope it will provide a comprehensive source of information on this most absorbing period in history.
