Drayton Manor Park and Zoo Near Tamworth, Staffordshire, UK
ShockWave
[Photo of ShockWave] STAND FOR NO RUBBISH! Shock Wave -- Drayton's stand-up steel coaster will not disapoint. Shock Wave has you on your feet sweeping round a dramatic but unthemed track. for an excellent coaster ride.
The photo shows the drag lift on the right, the track then sweeps left and loops before going through a gun-barrel cork-screw twist. The track has started to twist at the very left edge of the photo here.
The train consists of eight short 'cars' holding four people side by side. As the rider stands he or she is clamped securely with an under-groin and overhead swing-down restraint. There is no chance of falling out of this vehicle. You probably feel too secure!
[2nd Photo of ShockWave] I personally love the feeling of taking smooth sweeping turns at speed! The ride lasts about 45 seconds. It is a great ride, even if it is not quite as thrilling or scary as, say, Nemesis.
[3rd Photo of ShockWave] Drayton Manor was quite empty the week-day we went, in June 1994. There is not a lot else for the thrill seeker do at this theme park (and zoo), but if you get the chance: Stop by. Drayton have a water canyon-rapids ride and a powered coaster-train along with a few fairground-type rides. I remember they have a small log flume with three dives into an algae filled pond: Avoid!
