A practical demonstration of computer models: just an excuse for the pictures.

I wanted to build a cabinet to house audio-visual equipment in my art-deco period home. The geometric and streamline art-deco styles appeal to me, I took inspiration from some photos of 30s buildings.

3d render of design I used CorelDRAW and CorelDREAM 3D to illustrate the following design: A simple weight carrying structure with big extruding shelves. The joints will have to be strong and the wood will be flat and not bend easily. There will be space in the middle of the cabinet for cables and other stuff. A speaker sits underneath the television, and is flanked by AV equipment.
vrml model of cabinet VRML file lost... sorry.
cabinet exploded CorelDREAM makes it easy to produce images like the exploded diagram here. Having the model made it easy for Ruth and me decide if we liked it, if the equipment would fit the cabinet, and if the cabinet would fit in the room.
photo Finally, this is the finished cabinet. The wood took two days to cut, another to glue and fix, and a week to paint. The top shelf started to sag within the first week, another layer of wood doubling the thickness of the top shelf (stepped in, like the foot) fixed that and it's quite square now!
