ROSE SOCIETY OF NORTHERN IRELAND
International Rose Trials.
With the popularity
enjoyed by the rose in the latter part of the last century and a high percentage
of new British varieties emanating from this part of Ireland, a trial ground
was established near Belfast in 1965. Located in a public park,
The Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park, a few miles from the city, maintenance
of the Rose Garden was undertaken by Belfast Parks Department while the
Rose Society undertook local organisational matters. Entries,
coming from all parts of the world, have stayed consistently around forty
to fifty varieties each year with the emphasis now more on Cluster Flowered
(Floribunda) and Shrub Roses.
Final judging of the 2008/2009 trials will take place on Wednesday
15th July 2009.
The Rose Garden at St Anne's Park in the eastern outskirts of Dublin was opened in 1975 and a trial area added five years later. Originally for seedling (unregistered) roses, entries are now first year catalogued varieties.
Final judging of the 2008/2009 trials will take place on Friday 17th
July 2009.
