Geisel worked for humour magazines in the 1920's and 30's, producing both cartoons
and humorous articles, but started writing his books for children in 1936. He
managed to combine highly imaginative ideas with a restricted vocabulary to
encourage literacy among school children, who according to a report in Life
(May 1954) were slow in learning to read because they found books boring.
