Stuart Moverley's
Map Collection

The term 'antique' is used to describe any collectable item that is over 100 years old and this applies to maps, charts & plans just as much as the furniture, paintings and pottery that people usually associate with this term. The range of antique maps available is quite diverse so collectors often focus on a particular theme. My own personal interests lie in the following areas .....

Here are a couple of the earliest maps in my collection for you to browse, both by the
same French cartographer. Click on the thumbnails below to see the maps at full scale.

Carte de la Baye et Port de Plimouth
by Jaques Nicolas Bellin from his
'Petit Atlas Maritime' ~1764

Des Ville et Citadelle de Plymouth
by Jaques Nicolas Bellin from his
'Petit Atlas Maritime' ~1764

Other maps in my collection (in chronological order). Those that were of a suitable size for scanning are indicated by the hyperlinks so click on the titles to display the associated map.

Ashburton - Plymouth - Looe - Fowey - Tregony
  by J. Owen & E. Bowen  ~  c.1722

A correct Chart of the English Channel ... by Richard William Seale ~ c.1745
(insets of Isles of Scilly, Falmouth Haven, Plymouth Sound & Isle of Wight)

The Town and Citadel of Plymouth in the County of Devon by Anon ~ c.1755
No statement of responsibility on this map although it is known to have been produced
"for R.Baldwin of Paternoster Row". This appears to have been Richard Baldwin who
was a book seller at that London address around 1755.

A Plan of Plymouth & the Citadel / A Plan of Stoke Town & Plymouth Dock
by Benjamin Donn ~ 1765
Two plans on one vellum sheet. The second title is a bit misleading as the plan only shows
the walled township of Plymouth Dock (later to be re-named 'Devonport') and the dockyard
itself as it existed at that time. Stoke village isn't actually featured at all so one can only
assume that local geography and/or research wasn't Benjamin Donn's strong point.

A New & Correct Large Draught of
Plymouth Sound, Catt-Water and Hamoaze
by Capt. Greenvile Collins ~ 1792

A Plan of Plymouth Dock by John Cooke ~ 1810 [1990s]
surveyed, drawn & published by T. Richards of Totnes and dated
25th October 1810, this is a large scale and highly detailed town
plan measuring approximately 62cm x 70cm. Somewhat unusual
in that it's a restrike printed in the 1990s on modern paper from
the re-discovered original copper plate that had been lost for many
years.

Plymouth Sound & Breakwater by Anon ~ c.1820s  (engraved by G.Aikman, Edinburgh)
Plymouth Sound
by John Cooke ~ dated 25th October, 1824
Plymouth
by Lt. Robert Kearsley Dawson ~ c.1832
Plymouth / Devonport (with East Stonehouse)
by J & C Walker ~ c.1835
(this sheet also shows the towns of Honiton & Totnes)
Environs of Plymouth & Devonport
by Thomas Moule ~ c.1840
Plymouth, Devonport & East Stonehouse by John Tallis ~ c.1851
Plymouth, Devonport & East Stonehouse
by Adam & Charles Black ~ c.1852
Plymouth Sound
by Archibald Fullerton ~ c.1868
Plymouth Sound & Breakwater by Anon ~ c.1870s
Plymouth, Devonport & East Stonehouse by John Bartholomew ~ c.1899
Plymouth, Devonport & East Stonehouse by George W. Bacon ~ c.1901
