December, 1958.

4—At the monthly meeting of the British Legion Women's Section, first-class certificates for needlework were presented to Mrs. H. Saul and Mrs. F. Sallis.

6—Parish Church Christmas Fair. The gross takings amounted to £99/17/10.

7—Death at Suspension Bridge of Mr. Youngs Rogers Clingo, aged 79. As a child Mr. Clingo had lived with his parents at Ten Mile Bank, Littleport.

9—Annual Meeting of Littleport Women's Institute For the eleventh year in succession Mrs. W. J. Gill was returned as president. The Institute's trophy for gaining most points in the year's competitions was won by Mrs. J. Fletcher.

Miss Velda Taylor, S.R.N., eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Taylor, of 89, Victoria Street, Littleport, left for South| Africa recently to spend two years nursing at the Joubert Park Hospital, Johannesburg, South Africa.

10—County Primary School children presented "Brendon Chase,'' their annual play. The new stage, made possible by the efforts of parents and friends, was used for the first time.

11—A Carol Service at Black Horse Drove realised £7/10/0 for the Isle of Ely Society for the Blind.

12—Speaking at March of a government scheme to help small farmers, Isle M.P., Major Legge-Bourke, said "It was only natural and right that those in the prosperous areas with the better land should be called on to help, in some degree, those who were not so well off."

13—Thirteen year old Patricia Mott, of 58, Wisbech Road, Littleport sustained a fractured arm when she was knocked down by a car in Crown Lane.

St. John's Methodist Church Christmas Fair realised £60. The function was opened by Mrs. K. Darby.

16—Mr. and Mrs. A. Stebbings, of Mill Hill, Littleport, celebrated their silver wedding anniversary.

!!! 17—Meeting of Parish Council. In conjunction with Littleport's swimming pool project members of the Council decided to view a plastic-lined pool at Bletchley which cost about £7,500. It was reported that the local pool fund stood at £2,175.

19--Mr. and Mrs. T. B. James of Black Horse Drove were presented with a medal by the French ambassador as a mark of France's gratitude for a number of generous gestures they had made to French people and to France and especially for receiving into their family a young French boy whose father had died, a tragic death.

A happy home-coming and re-union with members of her family after fifty years in Canada was enjoyed by Mrs. Louisa Piket formerly Miss Thornhill, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Johnson Thornhill, of Littleport. Two of her sisters, Mrs. V. Hare and Mrs. J. Rogers, both of Littleport, were too young when she left to be able to remember her. Aged 73, Mrs. Pike emigrated to Canada in 1905, where she eventually married and settled in Ontario.

26--Boxing Day. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Coverdale celebrated their fifty-fifth wedding anniversary.

Engagement announced between Gordon, only son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Norman, of Lynn Road, Littleport, and Joan, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Collins, of Southery.

28--Boys' Brigade enrolment ceremony held at St John's Methodist Church. The newly formed Life Boys attended.

January, 1959.

2--Engagement announced between John Sinclair, elder son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Martin, of Highfield House, Littleport, and Katharine Elisabeth, youngest daughter of the late Rev. G. Barclay and Mrs. Barclay, of 32, Lyndewode Road, Cambridge.

Mr. and Mrs. S. Moore, of Butcher's Hill, Gate Lodge, Welney, announced the engagement of their only daughter Jean, to Brian, eldest son of the late Mr. B. H. Cox and Mrs. A. Collen, of Friars' Way, Littleport.

At examinations held in connection with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, the following pupils of Mrs. Chas. Haines were successful: Pianoforte—grade 1 (primary) Brenda Malkin; grade 2 (elementary), Mary Covell and Rosemary Germeney; grade 4 (lower), Iris Youngs; theory of music, grade 2, Rosemary Germeney; grade 4, Iris Youngs.

Annual Police ball held at the Grange Convalescent Home in aid of the Police Widows' and Orphans' Fund. 200 attended.

5--Ely Urban District Council accepted tenders from Messrs. Buckingham & Sparrow, of Littleport, totalling £22,719. for the erection of ten houses and nine bungalows.

Annual meeting of Littleport Wheelers Cycling Club. A strong and increasing membership and encouraging achievements in the various fields of cycling, was reported.

7--Over 100 local over seventies were entertained to a tea and party at the Grange. The hostesses were members of the British Legion Women's Section.

9--Littleport Wheelers annual supper and prize presentation. Johnny Marr (East Anglian C.C.) was a guest of honour.

9--Nearly 60 silver coins discovered during excavations on the river bank near Littleport last August were officially declared treasure trove. Their value was £6/11/6.

Annual dinner of the Black Horse Drove branch of the National Union of Agricultural Workers. Mr. A. V. Hilton (Swaffham) prospective Labour candidate for a Norfolk division, was a guest.

13--Paul Dunham, a pupil of Littleport County Primary School, gained a first prize in the Isle of Ely Education Committee's safety first essay competition for schools in the Isle

Monthly meeting of Littleport Women's Institute. The silver cup, awarded to the member gaining most points during the past year was presented to Miss M. Adams, and a W.I spoon was won by Mrs. R. Levett.

16--News received of the death at Bournemouth, of Mrs. Florence Merry, the wife of Mr. Edgar Merry, formerly of the Liberal Club, Ely. Mrs. Merry was the second Daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. Goodge, of Thoroughfare Yard, Littleport, and the sister of Mrs. J. Missin, of 27, Parsons Lane.

19--Annual meeting of Littleport Bowls Club. The possibility of Sunday evening play was discussed.

23--Engagement announced between Peter F. Morton of Manor Farm, Norton, Bury St. Edmunds, son of Mr. and Mrs. Flanders Morton, of Little Ouse, and Ann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Trevor Richardson, of Ipswich.

24--Tragic death of Mr. Maurice Leggett, a married man of Branch Bank, Prickwillow, and second son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Leggett, of White Hart Lane, Littleport. His body was found at 10.20 p.m., on the side of the New River Bank road. He was 31.

27--Inquest at Ely on the death of Mr. Maurice Leggett adjourned.

Death at Westminster Hospital, London, of Mr. Ernest Hatch, formerly of Littleport. He was 63.

28--Annual Society meeting of Littleport St. John's Methodist Church. It was revealed that Sidney Feltell, a Sunday school scholar, had again collected over £5 for Overseas Missions.

30--Mr. John P. Gray, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. S. Gray, The Gables, Ely Road, Littleport, was successful in passing the recent Final Examination of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.

The British Red Cross Society's Certificate of Honour, and Badge Class III, was presented to Mrs. H. E. Rowell by Lady Spens at Cambridge. Mrs. Rowell is the well-known Commandant of the Littleport Detachment of the B.R.C.S.

31--Retirement of Mr. G. A. See, of The Crescent, and manager of the Ely Co-operative Society's butchery branch at Littleport for 27 years. Mr. S. Trower was appointed to fill the vacancy.

!!! Littleport gas works closed down after over 100 years of gas-making. Records show that coke sold to the public in the 1890's was 13/- a ton. In the early 1900's the Company paid 18/- a ton for coal.

February.

1--British Legion Band concert at the Constitutional Hall. The Band were presented with their new instruments by former bandmaster, Mr. J. H. Hawkes, now president. It had taken years to raise the required sum, £1,000.

3--Mr. and Mrs. J. Dolby, of 1, Wisbech Road, celebrated their silver wedding anniversary.

At the resumed inquest on the death of Mr. Maurice Leggett, evidence was given that there was no sign of an accident at the roadside spot where he was found, and that he died of acute heart failure. The jury returned a verdict of death by natural causes.

!!! 4--Electricity failure at 8 p.m.--Littleport without electricity for 45 minutes.

In the County Youth senior table tennis championships, Black Horse Drove beat Haddenham 6-3 in a semi-final at Haddenham

In response to an appeal to Salvationists for instruments to form a band in East Africa, bandmaster Howard Padget, on behalf of the Littleport Corps, presented a drum and trombone to Major Howard at Norwich. Major Howard made the appeal.

Mr. L. Brooks presented certificates for good attendance at Black Horse Drove Coronation School. Anthony Harwood had a maximum attendance of 380.

5--Monthly meeting of Black Horse Drove Women's Institute. Mr. John Martin gave a talk on his previous year's tour of Canada and America.

7--Marriage at Ely Register Office of Miss Barbara Slack, of Leytonstone, London, and Mr. Harry Gathercole, fourth son of Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Gathercole, of Second Willow Row, Ten Mile Bank.

A crusade rally in connection with the "Here's the Answer" campaign was held in the Constitutional Hall. A special attraction was the return visit of the Norwich "Christ for Victory" choir.

11--The precept decided upon by Littleport Parish Council amounted to £3,050, compared with the previous year's figure of £3,000,

!!! Ely Rural District Council approved a programme for removing the 22 hutments at Saffron Close.

13--Engagement announced between Dawn, only daughter of Mr. And Mrs. L. H. Murfitt, of Saffron Close, Littleport, and Derek, only son of Mr. and Mrs. L. Bailey, of Ely.

Women's World Day of Prayer celebrated at the Independent Chapel. The speaker was Miss A. Atkinson, of Cambridge.

15--Angling—Open gala match organised by Littleport Angling Club attracted 98 entries. Six Littleport anglers gained prizes.

19--A successful year with increasing membership was reported at the annual general meeting of the Littleport Labour Party.

20--Mr. and Mrs. Bernie Cornwell of Station Road, celebrated their silver wedding anniversary.

Engagement announced between John, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fendick, of Black Horse Drove, Littleport and Iris, youngest daughter of Mrs. L. Bartaby, of Ely.

21--The local Salvation Army Corps commenced their 71st anniversary celebrations.

Marriage at Ely Register Office of Mr. Roy Butteris, of Manea, and Miss Roma Sharman, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Sharman, of Willow Row Drove, Littleport.

23--The Vicar of Ely, Rev. J. B. Rowsell, described the 150-years old plaque on his church wall commemorating the hangings which followed the Ely and Littleport Riots as "doubly and trebly a disgrace."

24--Norman South lost his unbeaten record in the Ely Table Tennis League.

Death at Newmarket Hospital, of Gloria Lily Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Brown, of St. Ovin's Green, Ely. Aged 22, Gloria had been an invalid from the time of her birth at Littleport.

A 33-acre smallholding at Burnt Fen was sold to Mr. R. G. Plummer, of Littleport, for £4,600 at a sale conducted by Messrs. A. T. Grain and Sons.

25--County Youth Darts and Table Tennis competitions finals held at Manea. Black Horse Drove Youth Centre succeeded in winning the senior darts competition but lost the table tennis final to March Congregational.

26--Mr. Sidney Rudderham, of Hale Fen, was presented with the Royal Humane Society's certificate at Ely Magistrates' Court. Mr. Rudderham had saved a 12-year old boy from drowning at Wells-next-the-Sea on July 20th last year.

27--Mrs. D. A. Newman, of Melbourne, Australia, and formerly of Littleport, was appointed lecturer in Biology at the College of Pharmacy in Melbourne. Mrs. Newman is the daughter of Mrs. B. M. Dade, of Church Street, Littleport.

28--Miss Lorna Death of Huntingdon was married at Huntingdon Register Office to Mr. Elliot North, only son of Mr. and the late Mrs. P. North, of Millfield, Littleport.

A resolution asking for a 44-hour week and a pay increase of 14/- a week was passed at a meeting at Cambridge of the National Union of Agricultural Workers.

A grand concert to mark the 125th anniversary of the foundation of the Ancient Order of Foresters Friendly Society was held in the Constitutional Hall.

Police Sergeant Henry Hutchings, stationed at Chatteris, retired from the Isle of Ely Police Force. Sergeant Hutchings was at Littleport from July. 1942, to the end of 1944.

March.

4—Littleport Cricket Club's second annual dinner,

5--Mrs. R. Jones, of Littleport, gave a beauty counsellor demoastration at a meeting of Little Ouse and Brandon Bank Women's Institute.

6--Engagement announced between Miss Rita-Peachey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. Peachey, of Parsons Lane, Littleport, and Mr. Ronald Mann, of Little Downham.

Major and Mrs. Legge-Bourke attended a dinner at Lincoln's Restaurant organised by Littleport Women's Conservative Association.

7--Major Webb and visitors from London presented a musical programme at the Salvation Army Hall.

7—8--Women's week-end services held at St. John's Methodist Church.

8--Mothering Sunday. Special service for parents and children held at the Parish Church. Mr. D. Speed spoke on "Motherhood" and the value of mother and her love.

Death at Ely, of Mr. William Bloomfield, formerly of Parsons Lane, Littleport. Aged 85, he was a widower.

Death of Mr. George Nightall, of Friars Place. He was a time-serving soldier and a member of the Old Contemptibles. He saw active service right through the first world war. Aged 72, Mr. Nightall was a bachelor.

10--Monthly meeting of Littleport Women's Institute. A suggestion received from the National Federation Executive Committee that W.I. subscriptions should be increased by 1/6 met with a cool response.

11--The following pupils of local schools succeeded in passing the 11 plus examination:—from Littleport County Primary School— Paul Dunham, Bryan Green, Stephen Lemmon, Richard Peachey, Stuart Porter, Christopher Reich, Roderick Ward, Michael Woodruff, Christine Carter, Iris Firby, Catherine House, Mary Law, Katherine Mackender, Susan Reeve. From Black Horse Drove Coronation School:—Kathleen Smith.

12--British Legion Women's Section meeting. Certificates won by members in needlework competitions at Eastern Area level were presented to Mrs. F. Sallis and Mrs. H. Saul.

14--Littleport British Legion Band individual darts tournament. Eric Taylor again won the Grand Challenge Shield.

Cambridge Music Festival—Littleport Ladies, Male Voice, and Mixed Choirs, under their conductor, Mrs. C. Browning, were awarded top marks in all their three classes. The Ladies choir was also awarded the highest mark of the Festival and so gained the trophy given by Sir Hamilton Kerr M.A., M.P.

18--Members of Little Ouse Women's Institute were the guests at a meeting of the Littleport Women's Fellowship.

20 Table tennis-Ely and District finals. Norman South won three  titles, including a victory over his brother Tony in the singles final.

21--At the County Youth Festival of Dancing held at Whittlesey, the Martin Secondary School gained two first awards and one second. One first in the square-dancing section ("Hot time in the Old Town Tonight") was of particular interest.

Marriage, at Elstow, Bedfordshire, of Mr. Edward Malcolm Sallis, only son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Sallis, of 72, Victoria Street, Littleport, and Miss Hazel Wilson, of Letchworth.

23--Annual meeting of Little Ouse and Brandon Creek Cricket Club. A favourable balance of nearly £30 was revealed.

26--Death at King's Lynn Hospital of Mr. Anthony Carpenter, 21-year old son of Mr. J. Carpenter, of Hempfield Place.

27--News received of the death at her home at Woodford, of Mrs. Alice Robinson, formerly Miss Goodge, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Goodge, of High Street, Littleport.

Good Friday—United service held in the Salvation Army Hall. The speaker was the Rev. C. G. Wade, Methodist Minister.

28--Marriage at St. Leonard's Church, Little Downham, between Miss Sheila Jordan, of Little Downham, and Mr. David Thompson, youngest son of Mrs. and the we Mr. F. Thompson of Black Horse Drove.

29--Easter Day—145 communicants made their communion at the Parish Church.

!!! Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Radcliffe, of Ely Road, extinguished an outbreak of fire in a house at King's Lynn. Five young children and a 16-year-old girl were in the house.

30--Easter Monday—Littleport British Legion Band were placed third in the Class A contest held in connection with the annual festival of the East Anglian Brass Band Association at Norwich.

April.

1--There was a record attendance at the annual meeting of Littleport Cricket Club. A balance in hand of £41/4/6 was reported.

!!! A party of ringers from the Oxford University Change of Ringers visited the Parish Church, Littleport, and rang a peal on the bells.

3--Mr. and Mrs. Philip Starling, of 22, Friars Place received the news that their daughter Jean had been successful in passing her State finals for Nursing. Jean had been training at Queen Mary's Hospital, Carshalton, together with her twin sister, Janet. The latter was recently married to Mr. G. Jenner, who is on the staff of Queen Mary's Hospital and now lives at Sutton, Surrey.

4--Marriage at the Parish Church, Coveney, between Miss Audrey Ding, of Coveney, and Mr. Ralph Sparrow, only child of Mr. and Mrs. W. Sparrow, of Parsons Lane, Littleport.

5--Littleport and District Motor Cycle and Light Car Club's annual car trial. M. R. Flack-Crane (Ford "Crewmaster") was the winner.

5--Cambridge and District Cycling Association's 25 mile time trial. Roger Dewsbury (Littleport Wheelers) won the award for the fastest junior.

6--A film show, depicting work among the lepers of India and other parts of the world, was shown to members of the Mothers' Union.

8--Annual singing competitions of the Isle of Ely Federation of Women's Institutes. The Littleport W.I. Choir, conducted by Mrs. C. Browning, gained the first award in Class A.

!!! Meeting of Parish Council. The Council had just agreed a site for the telephone kiosk to be erected at Sandhill, as recommended by a sub-committee, when Councillor L. W. Fox remarked: "The box is up, Mr. Chairman!"

!!! 10--Littleport British Legion made an appeal for £100 to meet the cost of improving Littleport's War Memorial and adding the names of the fallen of the last war.

Miss Sylvia Neve, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Neve, of 11, Hitches Street, was successful in passing her finals as a Registered Sick Children's Nurse.

The engagement was announced between Audrey, fourth daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hodson, Burnt Chimney Road, Littleport, and Bernard, only child of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Nicholas, of 32, Friars Way, Littleport.

13--Mr. J. H. Martin, of Highfield House, Littleport, who had served the Cambridge and District branch of the National Milk Records for some 36 years, was elected the first President of the branch.

14--Annual Parochial Church Council and Vestry meeting. Outstanding events during the year had been the confirmation by Bishop Walsh and the institution of the lay reader, Mr. Peter Sutton.

17--Members of the Trefoil Guild made a presentation to Miss Heather Creak, a loyal member, to mark the occasion of her forth-coming marriage.

18--Marriage at St. Mary's Church, Ely, between Miss Jean Cross, of Ely, and Mr. Terrence Strawson, son of Mr. P. W. Strawson, of Millpit Furlong, Littleport.

Local collections for the British Empire Cancer Campaign yielded £47/15/10. The collection was organised by Mrs. W. J. Gill and carried out by members of the Women's Institute.

20--Annual meeting of Littleport and Prickwillow Nursing Association. Miss M. A. Peake (secretary) spoke of the world-wide appeal of the Queen's Institute of District Nursing for funds for the training of nurses.

A flag day organised by members of the Women's Fellowship in aid of the Isle of Ely Society for the Blind realised £25/16/10.

24--It was revealed that the recent local collections for the Royal National Life-Boat Institution realised £23/7/1. The organiser was Mrs. Thurling.

24--Engagement announced between Miss Zeta Flack, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. Flack, of Millpit Furlong, Littleport, and Mr. Austin Bullman, of Soham.

Third anniversary party of the Over Sixties Club. The birthday cake was cut by two of the Club's oldest members, Mrs. A. Barber and Mr. C. Ayres.

25--Marriage at the Cathedral, Boston, U.S.A., between Mr. William Fowkes and Miss Catherine Felicity Payne, daughter of the Rev. Canon and Mrs. J. K. C. Payne, of Littleport Vicarage.

Marriage at St. Leonard's Church, Little Downham, of Miss Sylvia Hannah, of Pymoor, and Mr. Ronald Gray, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. S. Gray, of Saffron Close, Littleport.

After only 25 overs had been bowled rain put an end to Littleport's first match of the season at Cherry Hinton. Littleport had scored 65 for the loss of four wickets.

26--Visit of the Haverhill Salvation Army Band to the Salvation Army Hall, Littleport.

31--Football—The largest crowd of the season turned out at Highfield to watch Littleport girls lose to March girls by 3 goals to two.

In connection with the Isle of Ely Music Festival held at Wisbech, Marjorie Porter, of Littleport, gained top marks in the section for Soprano under 20.

May.

!!! 1--While digging in his garden, Mr. B. Neal, of Wisbech Road, came upon a shilling piece of the reign of Charles II.

Engagement announced between Brian, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Easy, of 22, Wellington Street, Littleport, and Minnie, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. Liles, of Soham Fen.

In a handwriting and art competition organised by a national tea firm, Susan Peill, Kathleen Smith and Richard Murfitt, pupils of Black Horse Drove Coronation School, gained first prizes.

The May Queen with her attendants toured Black Horse Drove. The result was £6/10/0 for school funds.

Meeting of the Over Sixties' Club. Pictures of members in their more youthful days were handed round. Those guessing the identity of most were awarded prizes.

2--Final concert and competition of the Isle of Ely Music Festival held at Wisbech. The three local choirs—Littleport Ladies, Male Voice and Mixed, all gained first awards.

5--39th birthday party of Little Ouse and Brandon Bank Women's Insititue.

!!! 6--A pullet owned by Mr. Sidney Flack, of Ely Road, laid her first egg —a monster weighing 5 1/2 ozs.—and then died.

7--Annual Boys' Brigade inspection, prizegiving and display. The award of the band bugling cup was won by L/Cpl. B. Burling, and the drumming trophy went to St/Sgt. T. Roberts.

British Legion Women's Section monthly meeting. It was agreed to donate the sum of £10 to the local War Memorial Fund.

8--Messrs. Law Brothers paid £2,150 for a detached residence in Hempfield Road, formerly the property of the late Mrs. A. M. Christmas.

Littleport Ladies' and Women's Institute choirs both gained first class certificates and trophies at Peterborough musical festival. In the class for rural schools, first place was awarded to the Martin School.

15--Meeting of the Trefoil Guild. An appeal made for members to take the places of Miss Davy and Miss Gill who were retiring from the Girl Guides brought no offers.

16--Marriage at St. Mary's Church, Ely, between Miss Shirley Kitchen, fifth daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. Kitchen, of Colville House, Lynn Road, Littleport, and Mr. Sidney Merry, of Ely.

17--Capt. U. Marshall and Lieut. O. Bailes, local Salvation Army officers, conducted their farewell meetings at the Salvation Army Hall. They were to take up a new appointment at Snettisham.

20--30 members of the Women's Institute visited Denman Training College, a W.I. Institution in Buckinghamshire.

22--New Salvation Army Officers, 1st Lieut, and Mrs. Lawrence Fisher, were welcomed by the local Corps.

Engagement announced between John, youngest son of Mrs. H. Underdown, of Black Horse Drove, Littleport, and Phyllis, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Munton of Tonbridge, Kent.

24--Cricket. Batting for Ely City, Tony South scored a brilliant century in 90 minutes against the Travellers.

25--Mr. P. H. Houlden took up his new appointment as Manager of the March branch of Messrs. Lloyds Bank Ltd. Mr. Houlden was appointed to the Littleport branch in 1946 and stayed for seven years.

!!! Littleport Parish Council decided to shelve a scheme for providing "grade A" lighting along the parish's two miles of trunk road.

Mr. J. H. Martin was again elected to the Chair at the annual Parish Council meeting. He had held this office for over 20 years.

!!! 28--Launching near Sandhill Bridge of a 12 foot sailing dinghy and a small catamaran built by pupils of the Martin School under the supervision of Mr. C. R. Browning. Mrs. J. H. Martin performed the ceremony.

30--Marriage at St. Mary-le-Tower Church, Ipswich, of Mr. Peter Flanders Morton, of Manor Farm, Norton, Bury St. Edmunds, and Miss Patricia Richardson, of Ipswich. Mr Morton is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Flanders Morton, of Church Farm.

A garden fete organised by the Boys' Brigade and Life Boy Team raised £100.

June.

Black Horse Drove Community Centre garden fete held in the gardens of the Willow Rows by invitation of Wing Commander and Mrs. Peill. The proceeds were £78.

!!! 21--Her Royal Highness, the Princess Margaret, took part in a special service at Ely Cathedral, in which the Roll of Honour of the fallen of the Cambridgeshire Regiment in the Second World War was dedicated by the Bishop of Ely (Dr. Noel Hudson).

Death at Cambridge of Mrs. Hannah Sparrow, wife of the late Mr. Charles Sparrow, formerly of City Road, Littleport.

22--Littleport Angling Club fished their first match of the season in poor conditions. The winner was A. W. Gilbert.

24--On behalf of the committee and mothers of Black Horse Drove Infant Welfare Clinic, Mrs. T. B. James made a presentation to their medical officer Dr. Dunn, who was leaving the district.

26--Miss Vivienne Convine, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. Convine of Drage's Farm, Woodfen, Littleport, was successful in gaining her B.A. degree at Southampton University.

27--Due to bad weather a fete in aid of the British Legion Women's Section was transferred to the Constitutional Hall where Mrs. F. G. Starling performed the opening ceremony. At a dance following Miss Averil Turner, of Hempfield Place, was crowned Littleport's beauty queen. The runners-up were Miss A. Buckingham (second) and Miss M. Turner (third).

!!! 1--In a ceremony at Buckingham Palace when token gifts of money were received by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother on behalf of the Queen's Institution of District Nursing Centenary appeal, Sister C. Biart of Littleport had the honour of presenting the purse from the Isle of Ely. Sister Biart was among the twelve nurses representing the Isle, and Nurse Bond, also of Littleport was included in the number.

Infants of the County Primary School held their annual sports under the supervision of Miss M. Davy. The prizes were presented by Mrs. J. Gilbert.

3--Miss Ann Browning, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Browning, of 5, Upton Place, and Mr. Ronald Sallis, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Sallis, of The Holmes, gained their B.A. degrees with honours in English, at Exeter University.

Isle of Ely Agricultural Society farms competition. Mr. F. G. Starling's Flanders Farm gained for him a challenge cup and first prize in the class for farms of over 300 acres.

Rabbit success—Mr. C. B. Cadnum, of Friars Way, gained two third prizes with a young doe which he exhibited at the National Young Tan Show held in Cheshire.

7--Cricket—Final of the Cyril Smith Cup at Highfield—Littleport defeated Mildenhall in an exciting game. Scores:—Littleport 126, Mildenhall 124.

8--Primary School junior children held their annual sports. The Boy and Girl Championships were won by Bryan Green and Janet Whitehand respectively.

Ely Rural District Council decided to erect a further eight garages on Woodfen Estate to meet the needs of existing applicants.

11--Owing to bad weather the Parish Church garden fete was transferred to the Constitutional Hall. The opener was the Rev. Thomas Vincent, of Clifton-on-Teme, Worcester, a native of Littleport. Proceeds were £97.

Gifts of book tokens were presented to the Vicar (Rev. Canon J. K. C. Payne) by the Sunday School children to mark his birthday.

14--"How to grow old gracefully" was the subject of a talk given at a meeting of the Women's Institute. The speaker was Miss Bird of Cambridge, a grand-daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Martin, formerly of Highfield.

15--Police Constable Richard Hodson, stationed at Haddenham and well known in Littleport where he spent nine years of his service, retired.

17--Mr. Frank Starling gained outstanding successes with his horses at the Royal Show. 18--Marriage at St. Mary's Church, Ely, between Miss Kathleen June Lee, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. Lee of Adelaide, and Mr. Christopher John Gilbert, only son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Gilbert, of "Broadlands," Wisbech Road, Littleport.

19--Littleport Angling Club's open match for the Wood-Barrett Cup was won by Ron Angel. The trophy became his own property as this was his third success in the competition.

23--A farewell service was held at St. John's Methodist Church for Miss Margaret Atkinson, of Littleport. She had been accepted for missionary work in the Trichinopoly Diocese of South India.

24--Cricket—The Happy Wanderers won their first ever trophy, defeating Ely Beet Sugar Factory in the final of the Black Horse Drove Invitation Cup. Scores:—Happy Wanderers 105, Beet Sugar Factory 51.

News received of the marriage in County Tyrone, Ireland, between Mr. Barry Constable, fourth son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Constable, of Parsons Lane, Littleport, and Miss Margaret Alexander, of Omah.

A total of 1,584 people visited the Mass Radiography Unit for X-ray examinations during the four days it was at Littleport. This compares with a total of 977 on its last visit in 1956.

!!! Littleport's annual show held in glorious summer conditions attracted fewer people than the show of the previous year, 3,700 against 4,000. Keith Fletcher of Littleport Wheelers won the 880 yards Junior B.C.F. East Anglian Division Championship.

Cricket—Littleport defeated by Cambridge Ramblers by 28 runs. Littleport's last man, Stan Stubbings, scored a sensational 53 in ten minutes.

26--Annual Feast Parade. Cups for the best decorated vehicles were won by the British Legion Women's Section and the Junior Red Cross Society. Collections amounted to over £87.

7--Death at Doncaster of Mrs. Alice Rattenbury, a former resident. Mrs. Rattenbury who was in her ninetieth year, was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Scotting of Station Road. She had spent 23 years of her life in Canada, and returned to this country some 26 years ago.

8--Marriage at the Berrycroft Methodist Church, Soham, of Miss Olive Badcock, of Soham, and Mr. Edward Tycer, first son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Tycer, of Burnt Chimney Drove, Littleport.

Miss Christine Young, only child of Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Young, of Upton Place, Littleport, was married at St. Mary's Church, Ely, to Mr. Peter Clark, of Ely.

9--Members of Littleport Angling Club fished for their annual outing trophy in the River Welland at Spalding. The winner was J. Clayton.

11--Monthly meeting of the Women's Institute. Mrs. W. J. Gill (President) referred to the recent passing of a loyal member and former refreshments hostess, Mrs. H. Lofts, and a short silence was observed to her memory.

13--Littleport Women's Institute tea and party for the over seventies. Gifts for those possessing the largest families were presented to Mr. Cole, Mrs. Kent and Mrs. Clift.

14--Mr. Fred Lucas, aged 81, of Ten Mile Bank Road, and Mr. Stephen Jordan, aged 77, of Wisbech Road, cycled to and from Denver Sluice, a distance of 20 miles.

21--News received of the death, at Shrewsbury, of Mr. Amos Vincent, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. F. Vincent, formerly of Ponts Hill, Littleport. Mr. Vincent, who was 71 and had lived for the past 35 years at Shrewsbury, joined the army in 1905 and was awarded the D.C.M. during the first world war.

1--At the Isle of Ely Police swimming gala held at Ely, P.c. Evison stationed at Littleport, distinguished himself by swimming 105 feet under water and later collecting 16 plates from the bottom of the pool in one go.

!!! 3--A pet budgerigar, which had escaped from its home in King's Lynn, was recaptured in Black Horse Drove by Kathleen and Jane Smith. The girls were generously rewarded.

5--Annual garden party in aid of St. John's Church, Little Ouse, was opened by Mrs. Luther Gilbert. About £90 was raised.

6--The Rev. John Lusty, newly appointed Methodist Minister, preached his first sermons at the St. John's and Victoria Street churches. Mr. Lusty came to Littleport from North Wales. He is a native of Billericay, Essex.

8--Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Constable, of Letter F Farm, celebrated their silver wedding anniversary.

10--Ely Magistrates dismissed a charge against three Wicken men of being concerned together in inflicting grevious bodily harm upon Hugh Vaas Beveridge, aged 36, of 58, Upton Place, Littleport.

11--News received of the death in Canada of Mr. Richard Gill, a former well known local resident who lived at one time at Butcher's Hill. Mr. Gill, who was 88, left Littleport as a young man. Mr. W. J. Gill of Quay Hill, is a nephew.

13--Rev. Sydney Chambers, Vicar of St. Matthew's, spoke of the Consecration of St. Matthew's Church which took place just 80 years ago.

16--Captain G. H. Robbins, of Little Ouse, conducted a harvest thanks-giving service at a meeting of Burnt Fen Women's Institute.

17--At a meeting of Black Horse Drove Community Association it was agreed to donate £5/5/0 to the effort being made in Littleport on behalf of the appeal by the Queen's Institute of Nursing.

19--Special Constable W. Saul, of Victoria Street, Littleport, was promoted to Acting Sergeant.

In connection with the Eastern Gas Board a long service certificate was presented to Mr. E. Moden, of Ponts Hill. He had recently retired after 34 years at Littleport Gas Works.

Littleport Over Sixties Club Skiffle Group led by 78-year old Mrs. Hannah Grindling, made a big impression at a concert in aid of Cambridge Red Cross, held at Cambridge.

3--Local collections for the Royal Air Forces Association yielded £8/16/7. The effort was organised by Mr. R. W. Howard.

4--Mr. and Mrs. Walter Barker, of Third Drove, Little Downham, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. At one time Mr. and Mrs. Barker lived at Apes Hall, Littleport.

6--The Isle of Ely Education Committee awarded an Exhibition Scholarship to Geoffrey Eastwood, a pupil of Soham Grammar School and son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Eastwood, of Lynn Road, Littleport.

7--Meeting of the Women's Fellowship. A presentation was made to Mrs. G. Kitchen, a member who was leaving the district.

!!! 14--A definite decision to go ahead with their swimming pool project—subject to Ministerial approval and loan sanction—was made by Littleport Parish Council.

15--Fourth annual meeting of the British Legion Women's Section. In competitions throughout the year Mrs. L. Thurling had gamed most points.

17--Re-opening of the Littleport Salvation Army Hall after extensive repairs and re-decoration. Councillor H. K. Cross performed the ceremony.

18--Inter-county angling match fished at Littleport. Result:—Cambridgeshire first, Isle of Ely second. Six members of the Littleport club were included in the Isle team.

21--Mrs. J. Gilbert, of Littleport, gave a demonstration on quilting at a meeting of Burnt Fen Women's Institute.

The Friendly Societies Charities Committee allocated money collected on Parade Sunday as follows:— £10 each to the Littleport and Prickwillow Nursing Association, the Red Cross (Littleport Detachment), the S.J.A.B. Central Fund, Maternity and Child Welfare, British Legion Band Fund and the 1st Littleport Company the Boys Brigade; £7/10/0 to the Lord Kitchener Memorial Home, Lowestoft; and £5 to the Littleport Over Sixties Club.

A celery demonstration showing every aspect of growing and marketing was held at Messrs. Luddington's Estates Whitehall Farm.

23--Cycling—Roy Murfitt became Littleport Wheelers best all-rounder, recording the fastest times in each of three qualifying events. Roy Benstead proved to be the best junior and Christine Hallam won the ladies' event.

!!! An American thornapple plant was discovered growing near Black Horse Drove. It was about three feet high with large leaves and seed pods about the size of a hen's egg. The plant was covered with spikes. Deadly poisonous, this particular specimen was destroyed by fire.

24--The proceeds of a gipsy fayre and dance organised by Littleport Women's Institute amounted to £156. Large crowds watched the parade of "Raggle Taggle" gipsies which was a preliminary to the opening.

27--Mr. and Mrs. A. Bowles, of The Hythe, celebrated their silver wedding anniversary.

Drivers and conductors of the Ely Depot of the Eastern Counties Omnibus Co. received safe driving and safe conducting awards. Littleport recipients were:—Drivers: P. Starling, L. W. Fox, G. Washington, V. House. Conductors: F. V. Borley, D. W. Murfitt, G. Lemmon.

1--Cycling—Roy Murfitt, of Littleport Wheelers, won the hill climb organised by the Cambridge and District Cycling Association. Keith Fletcher was third.

4--Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Watson, of Wisbech Road, celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Members of Little Ouse Women's Institute attended the 33rd Birthday party of the Welney W.I.

Mr. Reg Scott, of 9 Lynn Road, Littleport, returned from a tour of various counties in England and Scotland. The tour was in connection with a Nuffield scholarship award for farmers which Mr. Scott had won.

Death, at St. Mary's Lodge, Ely, of Mrs. Eliza Cross, a former resident of Littleport. Aged 85, Mrs. Cross was the widow of the late Mr. A. M. (Dick) Cross, who died nineteen years ago, and the third daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Brown of White House Farm.

10---Littleport Women's Institute monthly meeting. Dr. Clarke, a child psychiatrist, gave a talk on health and beauty through correct diet.

11--It was reported at a meeting of the Isle of Ely Health Executive Council that Dr. A. I. Cheyne had been taken into partnership by Dr. T. B. Gordon.

John Thorpe, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Thorpe, of Wisbech Road, a member of the 10th Ely (King's School) Scouts, received his certificate for passing the Queen's Scout test from the Chief Scout, Sir Charles McLean, at the Goldsmiths' Hall, London.

20--Presentation made to Mr. Percy Cooper by the staff of Littleport Post Office to mark his retirement after 25 years as a postman on the local staff.

21--Successful Autumn Bazaar organised by the Littleport Boys Brigade for company funds brought in about £34.

22--Members of Littleport Wheelers Cycling Club attended the Fenland Road Racing Association's annual dinner at Peterborough. Recipients of medals were John Casey and Roger Dewsbury.

!!! 27--A potato of the King Edward variety, lifted on Messrs. J. H. Martin & Sons' farm at Black Horse Drove, turned the scale at 3 lbs. 9 1/2 ozs. It was 14 inches long and 13 inches in girth.

28--Mrs. R. Wyllie opened the Salvation Army Christmas Sale which realised £63.

East Anglian brass band solo and quartet contests held at Newmarket. Littleport British Legion prizewinners were Steven Misson, first in the junior solo contest and Brian Halls, second in the senior solo contest. The two quartet entries gained first and second prizes respectively.

Miss Catherine Smith, fifth daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Smith, of Friars' Way, Littleport, was married at Ely Register Office, to Mr. Frederick Marshall, of Histon.

30--Miss Rosemary Harris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. Harris, of 76, Victoria Street, passed the preliminary State Nursing examinations, parts one and two.

Mr. J. Neville, of Ely, elder son of Mr. E. Neville, of Ely Road, Littleport, and the late Mrs. Neville, was appointed manager of Messrs. Boots Drug Stores branch in North Walsham, Norfolk.
