About Littleport Village College

Littleport Village College was created in 1970 when the Martin Secondary School was renamed. It provided a full comprehensive curriculum for 550 mixed pupils between the ages of 11 and 16.

The school drew pupils from four near-by Primary Schools:

            Littleport County Primary School

            Feoffes School, Little Downham

            Black Horse Drove School

            Little Ouse School

There was a free bus service for pupils who lived in the villages around Littleport

Little Downham, pick up point - Towns End

Pymoor, pick up point - The Bus Shelter

Little Ouse, pick up point - The school

Black Horse Drove, pick up point - The Railway Crossing

The school consisted of two main buildings, one in front of the other, joined by a covered walkway.

The main entrance was in the center of the front block. This building was three stories high with four classrooms on each of the top two floors, the ground floor was the administritive offices and the various head teachers offices. To the right of the main entrance was the Main hall and beyond this was the Gymnasium and outdoor swimming pool. To the left of the main entrance was a corridor leading to the craft/workshop area of the school, consisting of a woodworking room with the usual woodworking machines including a lathe, art room with a kiln for pottery, technical drawing room and metalworking workshop which had lathes, a milling machine and even a forge in it.

The two story building at the rear of the main one was always called the 'New Block'. It housed the Library and music room on the ground floor as well as three general classrooms that had sliding walls between them so that it could be opened up to form another asembly hall. Upstairs was three science labs (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) and three domestic science rooms (two with cooking facilities).

There was two 'playgrounds' seperated by the new block of classrooms. Pupils from the first three years were in one and from the senior two years in the other.

To the rear of the school and close to the senior 'playground' were the sports fields. Between the sports fields and the senior playground was the 'tempoary' mobile classrooms. These were two porta-cabins that were used to provide extra space until some new buildings were erected, these were never built and the 'temporary' classrooms were used for many years.

There was also a wooden classroom that was used by Mr Finney (in my time at least). This was used as a science lab.

The school had a blue mini-bus that was housed in a garage also next to the senior playground. The garage was built from fund rasing done by the PTA. I can clearly remember helping by buying a brick for 50p as part of the fundraising!
