For those of you who remember Charles Buchan's Football Monthly here is a reproduction of and article from the 1961 February edition. The cover price was one shilling and sixpence and the stars on the front cover were Phil Woosnam (West Ham and England) , Jimmy Mcilroy (Burnley ), Johnny Haynes (Fulham) and Jimmy Greaves (Chelsea and England). Inside, the magazine asked whether todays stars compare to those of yester-year. A report on England's 5-1 defeat of Wales . Subbuteo was advertised for 9/11d, 19/7d and 47/3d. Depressingly little has changed , Rangers imported a continental coach to try to emulate the European style, letters to the editor complain of cash greed ruining soccer, the advent a a super league and postponing club game to allow for international duty. One letter suggests that a new rule should be introduced to allow 2 foreign players per club.
SUTTON UNITED are one of the three most progressive clubs in the Athenian League. In 1953, in order to finance their new stand project, they became a limited liability company. They have a long-term lease of the Borough Sports Ground, where the terraces hold some 10,000 and the new stand over 1,000. Construction work under this stand to provide dressing and club rooms at a cost of £15,000 has already begun.
Chairman Andrew Letts, a solicitor, is the driving force behind these developments. He has had splendid support from honorary secretary Bob Roberts, Bill Craddock, a local cycle shop owner, and former England amateur international goalkeeper, Ralph Carr.
For more than half of their sixty years Sutton have been members of their present League, and have won the championship three times. The last occasion they headed the table was in season 1957-58, when managed by forthright George Smith. They also won the London Senior Cup. When George took over the reins at Crystal Palace he was succeeded by West Ham star, Malcolm Allison. But Sutton discovered that they could no longer afford to retain such top-class coaches and gave the managership to one of their old players, Peter Molloy.
Peter's skill and tact bore fruit when Sutton won their first seven Athenian matches this season and reached the first round of the F.A. Cup by beating Southern League professionals, Bexley Heath and Welling. This season Sutton are particularly strong in defence. Their young goalkeeper, Ray Watkins, has already gained Athenian League honours. Dave Leonard, another young star with a polished style, has settled down firmly at right-back. Reg Peekwho regained his first-team position after a year as skipper of the reservesCohn Pearce and John Simpkins, who returned to the club from Maidstone in November, have been fighting for the left-back position. John Symons deputised at right-half when John Berry was injured. Eddie Clack F.A., Corinthian League and Surreydoes a good job on the left, and another experienced Surrey County player, Malcolm Robbins holds the centre.
Norman Dearlove, who went to Sutton via Carshalton Athletic, Ban-stead and Epsom; and whose goal-scoring achievements brought him very much into the limelight earlier in the season, leads a well-balanced attack.
Alan SunnucksF.A. and Surrey and the captain, Percy VinceSurrey and Corinthian Leagueform the right wing, and brilliant Dave HermitageF.A., Surrey, Athenian and Corinthian Leaguesand Eddie Green, are on the left.
When Eddie cannot get Army Leave, Dave Small, from Brentwood and Warley, deputises.
