Surrey Senior Cup 2nd Round

Sutton United 2

Ashford Town 0

Not a game that will linger in the memory for very long but Sutton have gone comfortably through to the next round of the Surrey Senior Cup in a poor game played it has to be said, in atrocious conditions throughout, the wind and rain and the state of the pitch not helping either side.

John Ugbah was rested in midfield where Steve Watson came into the side and Paul Clark had an enforced rest as he began a two-match ban for accumulated yellow cards.

Ashford had two chances in the first quarter of an hour to embarrass their higher league opponents but Richard McDonald and Lee Holman both spurned half chances the latter after a mix up between Les Cleevely and Gwynne Berry allowed him in but his shot from an acute angle hit the side netting.

Matthew Hanlan had Sutton's first opportunity nearly twenty minutes into the game Andy Salako delivering a cross to the near post, Hanlan getting to the ball before the advancing keeper but his header went right across goal and just past the post.

Sutton then had to wait until three minutes into the second half for their next good opportunity but with it they took the lead. Andy Salako once again the provider of a quality cross which was cleared off the line but ended up being volleyed back into the net by Steve Watson who was hovering on the edge of the box.

Sutton fans probably thought that their team would go on to win comfortably after that but it wasn't to be and whilst Ashford were always in the game at one nil they lacked the cutting edge to really trouble Sutton's defence.

As the game went into injury time Sutton finally made the game safe when another Salako cross was flicked in at the near post by Joff Vansittart.

The Sutton line up was:

Les Cleevely, Danny Brooker, David Everitt, Gwynne Berry, James Virgo, Barry Laker, Jimmy Dack, Steve Watson, Andy Salako, Matt Hanlan and Joff Vansittart.

John Ugbah, Nassim Akrour and Dominic Feltham were the subs.

Sutton now go through to meet local rivals Kingstonian in the next round they having got past the Metropolitan Police by three goals to one at Ember Court.
