ISTHMIAN LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION

BROMLEY 1

SUTTON UNITED 1

On a wet and windy night at Hayes Lane in front of 405 spectators Sutton took away a precious point in their fight to stay in touch at the top of the table, this being their first draw in the league this season. Also for those who like statistics, it was the first time this season in any competition that they had failed to score less than two goals in a game.

Sutton made two changes from the normal line up James Virgo coming into the starting line up for Sean Daly and Clive Gartell making a welcome return to the club, stood in for Gwynne Berry.

It looked early on as if this was going to be game with lots of goals as firstly Paul Campbell for Bromley, and then Jimmy Dack both had fierce drives that only just cleared the bar, and then a minute later Matt Hanlan twisting and turning inside the box put a shot just wide of the post after good work down the right by Andy Salako.

Les Cleevely made two fine saves in less than a minute firstly from Dwayne Minors who was in on goal after a slip by Clive Gartell and then he pushed away a driven cross that looked like it was heading for the top corner.

Joff Vansittart got in on the act ten minutes later taking on the defence virtually on his own and forcing a good save from keeper David Wietecha but the ball would not go in for either team and we reached the break goaless.

The rain was unrelenting as was the action in the second half as both sides tried desperately for the opening goal. Joff Vansittart charged down a Wietecha clearance and the ball eventually found its way across to Matt Hanlan who's shot looked goal bound, but hit a defender and went away for a corner. Three minutes later Les Cleevely was again called into action when Sutton failed to clear the ball out of their box and it fell to Tim Grigs who hit a left foot shot which Les saved diving away to his right.

This was the start of a good spell for Bromley and Les was forced to make two more fine saves, a fist over the bar from Dwayne Minors being the best of them before Bromley finally took the lead. Dean Wordsworth, back with Bromley after his spell at Crystal Palace, driving towards the Sutton penalty area and being felled from behind by Steve Watson just as he was about to shoot. However he struck the resulting free kick sweetly over the Sutton wall and into the net off the inside of the post to put Bromley in front.

Despite having a lot of possession it seemed like it wasn't going to be Sutton's night and when with four minutes to go, Dominic Feltham who had come on for James Virgo, missed a golden opportunity to level it from ten yards out it seemed to be all over. But in injury time a free kick was awarded on the right side of the Bromley penalty area which was floated in by Jimmy Dack and there was Andy Salako to head in a deserved equaliser.

Dagenham and Redbridge stretched their lead at the top after a 4-2 home victory over Walton and Hersham and Kingstonian lost further ground when they went down 0-2 at Aylesbury. See league table for further details.

Sutton now face Yeading at home on Saturday in their next league game and for those who didn't see it on the Tonbridge report have been drawn away to Vauxhall Conference high flyers Cheltenham in the last qualifying round of the FA Cup.
