CHESHUNT 0 SUTTON UTD 4
13th September 1997
Sutton visited a side from the Icis League Division two for the second time in a week and have come away again with a comfortable victory in the first hurdle of this season's FA Cup competition.

Sutton reverted to a more familiar line up with Joff Vansittart, Gwynne Berry and Matt Hanlan all returning to the starting line up after being rested on Tuesday night at Bracknell. The one enforced change was John Ugbah coming into midfield for Jimmy Dack who picked up an injury on Thursday night in training.

The game started quietly and apart from a Salako header that was cleared off the line after 6 minutes there were no other chances until Sutton finally took the lead after 16 minutes with a simple goal. A long free kick by Gwynne Berry was headed down by Joff Vansittart into the path of Matt Hanlon who clinically finished with a low shot into the far corner of the net. Sutton were always in control and could have had several more, notably through Andy Salako twice and Joff Vansittart who's height and strength caused the Cheshunt defenders problems all afternoon.

It wasn't until the 31st minute that Les Cleevely was troubled at all when he dealt well with a Kevin Gilzean shot and after 40minutes Sutton effectively killed off the game as a contest when Vansittart converted a simple chance after a shot from Matt Hanlon had come back off the bar following some good work from David Everitt .

Sutton virtually cruised through the second half but it wasn't until twenty minutes from the end when they got there third, Andy Salako scoring with a header from a free kick taken by Danny Brooker, and six minutes later Steve Watson put through Joff Vansittart for his second and Sutton's fourth which he calmly lobbed over the advancing keeper.

Dominic Feltham and Dave Patullo then replaced Vansittart and Gwynne Berry and Feltham then spurned a chance of his own near the final whistle. Les Cleevely did make one great save right on time from a fierce effort to keep a clean sheet but Sutton by then were in total control of the game.

They will face stiffer opposition in the next round when they visit Welling United of the Vauxhall Conference who comfortably dealt with Leyton Pennant by three goals to nil.

The Sutton side was Les Cleevely, Danny Brooker, Gwynne Berry (Dave Patullo) , Sean Daly, Paul Clark, David Everitt, John Ugbah, Andy Salako, Steve Watson, Joff Vansittart (Dominic Feltham) and Matt Hanlan. Jimmy Dack was the unused substitute.

Sutton's next match is away to Enfield in an important league game on Saturday their midweek fixture being postponed as opponents Dulwich are now involved in a replay having drawn their tie with Bedford. Enfield lost yesterday at home to Dagenham and Redbridge by 2 goals to one to enable Sutton to remain at the top of the Icis League.
