FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round

Sutton United 5

Tonbridge Angels 1

Sutton emphatically through to the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup in a game that they never looked in any danger of losing. Joff Vansittart giving an early indication of things to come when he outpaced the whole Tonbridge defence as early as the third minute but struck his shot against the oncoming keeper. But it didn't take Sutton long to take the lead when five minutes later a Jimmy Dack cross was met by Vansittart at the far post and his header beat keeper Joe Radford. David Everitt nearly got on the score sheet minutes later when he just failed to convert a cross after Matt Hanlan had dispossessed a Tonbridge player in midfield. Everitt however, was determined to score himself and after twenty minutes he carved his way through the defence beating several players only to be fouled inside the box just as he was about to shoot and Matt Hanlan calmly stroked in the penalty kick. And the game was effectively over as a contest three minutes later when another fine run and cross by Everitt was scythed into his own net by Matt Broadway who was desperately trying to clear his lines.

Steve Watson tried to get in on the act after thirty-eight minutes after good work down the right by Danny Brooker but his cross cum shot came back off the far post with the keeper stranded.

Sutton however, were not yet done and Jimmy Dack's fierce right foot shot three minutes from half time made it four - nil.

Les Cleevely had been a virtual spectator throughout the first half and his first real job of the afternoon was to pick the ball out of the net right on half time, a corner on Sutton's right headed in by Mark Freeman with the Sutton defense flatfooted. The referee's whistle going soon after the goal was scored. This however, was a prelude to astonishing scenes as the players left the pitch. The Tonbridge manager clearly upset, and having to be escorted down the tunnel by police as he argued with his own fans.

Soon after half time Dave Pattullo came on for Gwynne Berry and for a time the second half was without any incidents of note but midway through Steve Watson brought the crowd back to life, the ball being cleared to him ten yards outside the box and his fierce right foot shot thundered against the crossbar with the goalkeeper beaten. Five minutes later though, Sutton did increase their lead. A free kick awarded thirty yards out was played to Jimmy Dack who shot was saved by the keeper only for Matt Hanlan to push in the rebound for his second of the afternoon.

Dominic Feltham and John Ugbah then replaced Joff Vansittart and Steve Watson respectively as Sutton clearly with one mind on Tuesday night eased off the gas slightly. However Matt Hanlan was still trying to get his hat trick and with eight minutes to go he should have got it. Dominic Feltham quickly took a free kick for a foul on David Everitt and laid the ball into the path of Hanlan but he stroked his shot just beyond the far post.

The Sutton line up was: Les Cleevely, Danny Brooker, David Everitt, Gwynne Berry, Sean Daly, Paul Clark, Steve Watson, Jimmy Dack, Andy Salako, Matt Hanlan and Joff Vansittart.

Dave Pattullo, Dominic Feltham and John Ugbah were the substitutes who came on as previously stated.

Sutton have been drawn against Cheltenham of the Vauxhall Conference in the last qualifying round but before then will meet Bromley this Tuesday in an important Isthmian League fixture at Bromley kick off 7.30pm
