GUARDIAN INSURANCE CUP 2ND ROUND
SUTTON UNITED 3
UXBRIDGE 0
In front of the lowest home attendance of the season (186) Manager John Rains took the opportunity to give several squad members a run out against first division Uxbridge.
Dave Pattullo and Dominic Feltham made their first appearances in the starting line up since the last round at Bracknell and Naseem Akrour made his debut for the first team.
There was an early scare when a Sean Daly back pass was intercepted but the shot was cleared. Naseem Akrour was thwarted on nine minutes by a fine save by keeper Dawson and John Ugbah headed the resulting corner just wide but in truth it was a fairly low key first half with Sutton finding it hard to make any progress against a resolute Uxbridge defence.
And whilst Sutton had more chances after the break it wasn't until the 71st minute that the first goal was scored. A corner by Jimmy Dack resulted in a goal mouth scramble and when the ball finally found its way back to the taker he drilled in a cross which was headed back into the danger area by Akrour and finished off by John Ugbah.
Five minutes later it was two. Danny Brooker received the ball from a short corner and his low drive was parried by the keeper but Joff Vansittart put the rebound into the net. Sutton were now well on top and the chances arrived thick and fast. However it was not until the last minute that Sutton got the third. An intelligent throw by Les Cleevely put David Everitt away down the left and from his cross Vansittart scored from close range.
The Sutton side was Les Cleevely, James Virgo, Dave Pattullo, Sean Daly, Danny Brooker, Jimmy Dack, Dominic Feltham, Naseem Akrour, Andy Salako, John Ugbah and Joff Vansittart.
David Everitt replaced James Virgo. Matt Hanlan replaced Jimmy Dack and Paul Clark was unused.
