Harrow Borough (0) 0
Sutton United (3) 3 Akrour 17, 23mins Watson 45mins.
Sutton cruised to a comfortable victory at Earlsmead this afternoon against lowly Harrow Borough. All the goals came in the first half with Andy Riley even having the luxury of missing a penalty.
Sutton went into the game with a new name in their line up, John Ugbah having picked up a knock at Dulwich on Tuesday so David Harlow, signed on Thursday from Farnborough Town, got an early chance to impress the United fans.
And it was Harlow who had the first chance, carving his way through the home defence, but he was denied by a last ditch challenge as he was about to shoot. He was also involved in the move with which Sutton went in front after seventeen minutes, playing the ball out to Nko Ekoku, whose pinpoint cross was met at the near post by Naz Akrour who side footed the ball home from close range.
The home defence playing up the slope was struggling to hold Sutton's lively front three and Darren Coleman was booked for a challenge from behind on Mark Watson after twenty-three minutes. From the resulting free kick Sutton went two up, Akrour getting across the defence to head home his second past a forlorn David Hook.
Five minutes from half time it should have been three, Nko Ekoku was brought down inside the box but Andy Riley's spot kick although powerfully struck was hit straight at the keeper and the ball rebounded to safety off his legs. However Sutton were not to be denied and right on the stroke of half time they effectively killed the game off. Akrour was involved again cleverly beating a defender on the edge of the box and shooting across goal for Mark Watson to touch the ball in off the far post.
Gwynne Berry was injured just before the break and although he carried on he failed to appear for the second half and Barry Laker replaced him. Otis Roberts also replaced Darren Coleman for Harrow and it was he who had the home side's first chance of the second half hitting the side netting from just inside the box. Sutton made further changes, Junior Haynes replacing Mark Watson and Barry Blackman coming on for Andy Salako early in the second half. Danny Nwaokolo did hit the outside of the post after sixty minutes for the home side but the game was effectively killed off by then, Sutton's changes seeming to effect their rhythm and in truth the second half was a fairly mediocre affair.
The Harrow line up was:-
David Hook, Aidan O'Brien, Danny Nwaokolo, Jeremy Lord, Darren Coleman (Roberts), Alan Paris, Paul Adolphe, Jon-Barrie Bates, Pat Gavin, Ishmael Dodds (Lawford) and Frank McCormack.
Nelson Kumah was the unused sub.
The Sutton line up was:
Gareth Howells, Danny Brooker, Andy Riley, Gwynne Berry (Barrie Laker), Richard Skelly, Steve Watson, David Harlow, Andy Salako (Barry Blackman), Nassim Akrour, Mark Watson (Junior Haynes) and Nko Ekoku.
All subs were used
Leaders Bromley were beaten 2-1 at Hendon so Aldershot moved to the top of the table after a thrilling 4-3 victory over Dagenham & Redbridge. Billericay are third, Sutton move up to sixth and Aylesbury dropped out of the leading group after a 1-0 defeat at Slough.
