Nuneaton Borough were 4th in the table before this game and would have been a tough nut to crack, however Sutton must have caught them on a bad day because the Borough never really got going . Unfortuneately any hopes Sutton may have had of getting something from this game ended in the 33rd minute. Dave Harlow lost the ball in midfield and the ball was crossed in. The ball was cleared off the Sutton line but it must have been a hand ball , as Jimmy Dack was sent off. Andy Ducros converted the penalty. Sutton had had a golden chance after 10 mins when Laker blasted over when well placed in the penalty area. Little saved a one on one in the 40th minute. The home sides most dangerous moments coming from breakaways and very rarely putting any sustained pressure on the Sutton defence. If was from one of these breakaways that the second goal came. An excellent through ball down the middle sent Ian Muir off on a one on one and he gave Little no chance (44 mins).
The second half saw a gutsy performance from Sutton , it was hard to believe that the U's had one man less. A Harlow free kick forced the keeper to save well , Winston shot wide from a tight angle after the keeper had fumbled, Winston fired over from a Watson cross and the keeper failed to gather a loose ball but Winston could not capitalise. Nuneaton had their moments Little again did well with a one on one in the 78th minute and Ducros hit the bar , the number six then screwed the ball high and wide from the rebound, when it seemed easier to score.
Paul sears replaced Danny Brooker in the full back spot, Danny went in the middle of the defence with Laker and Berry. Rowland and Ekoku started up front.
