This was a game Sutton should have won. Despite going a goal down in the
first 4 mins Sutton fought back and were 2-1 up after 8 mins. Both goals
came from Jimmy Dack and were similar in nature . For the first Sammy Winston
held the ball up then laid it on to Jimmy Dack who had made
a fine run to the edge of the area. He then slotted it past Wilkerson in
the welling goal. The second differed from the first only in the player
delivering the ball to Dack. In this case it was Mark Watson
who made the running. The first 25 minutes of this game saw Sutton tear through
Welling and it seemed a matter of how many they would score. Then Sutton
switched off and Welling took the game to Sutton . The turning point was
a fine goal by bailey on 38 mins. Although give plenty of time to tee
up his shot He still had to finish from some distance. It was Sutton who
were the more relieved to hear the half time whistle.
The second half saw less pressure from welling but a
very scrappy Sutton performance , with very little football played. The winning
goal came on the 70 minute. Howells came well out side the area to tackle
a Welling forward. He only half cleared the ball and it fell to Dennis whose
speculative lob paid dividends. Sutton brought on Salako and Ekoku for Berry
and Skelly, but they could never recover the rythmn of the first 25 and finished
second best.
