Another disappointing derby game, which lacked any of the passion that the supporters might have expected. Both United and Athletic had good periods of the game which should have extended the score line.

In the first half Sutton had full control of the game with Carshalton rarely able to win control of the ball. The U’s could have taken the lead as early as the second minute when a great cross by Danny Bolt was collected by the Robins keeper,  who fell against his defender and dropped the ball at the feet of Danny Brooker but his shot was deflected wide. With twenty minutes gone Richard Thompson, who was in impressive form all day, dispossessed Lee Rodgers on the edge of the area before beating Lee Akers and taking a shot at goal which dragged wide of the post. United finally got their disserved break thru when Nko Ekoku played the ball down the wing to Bolt who was able to deliver another an excellent cross over the top of the defenders to Thompson who was able to dive and meet the cross and put the ball passed the keeper and into the net. Just before half time Sutton could have doubled the lead when Bolts cross was deflected to Thompson who tried to lob the keeper but his shot bounced wide of the post.

United only had three minutes to wait for the first chance when Nko Ekoku cross hit the hand of one of the Carshalton defenders. The penalty was awarded to Sutton and Bolt stepped up to take the kick but the keeper guessed the right way and was able to push the ball wide. Ten minutes later Carshalton had their best chance of the game when a ball was played over the top of the united defence to the Carshalton number three who was one on one with Howells but still put his shot wide of the goal. Minutes later a similar chance fell to the number three again but this time he blasted high over the bar. With ten minutes left to go a clearance from a corner fell to Carshalton’s Justin Jones who struck a great volley towards goal but Howells was equal to the shot. In the final minutes Danny Bolt beat the offside trap and ran into the area with the Carshalton defence trying to catch up. Bolt then squared the ball to Paul Sears who had most of the goal to aim at but his shot was blocked.
